For breakfast I had eggs and cheese and 2 slices of whole wheat cinnamon raisin bread and my levels were low..

lunch i have peanut butter on a slice of whole wheat with fruits and veggies

dinner is about 2 oz of meat with some cheese and maybe a small roll. or a salad... last night i had a grilled chicken quesadilla...

of course see what the nutritionist says but im finding it easier to control my blood sugar as i go along.. dont worry!! we are all here for you!

Re: Just found out I have GD

what kind of numbers did you have? i never heard of a gd diet with no carbs.

breakfast i have a egg with half a thin roll. I will probably add more since my levels are low and im hungry an hour later
snack 1 i have a 90cal fiber one bar with cheese stick
lunch- healthy choice meal (no more than 34g of carbs) salad and a small fruit
snack 2 is the same as one
dinner is 3-4oz of lean mean 1 cup of wild brown rice 1 cup of veggies and a small fruit
snack 3- i change it up with a lite an fit yogurt, peanut butter with wheat thins or i stick to my fiber one bar with cheese

i believe everyones diet is different based on how active you are.

in time you will figure out what will work.

last night i had a burger on a whole wheat thin roll with homemade spicy thai mayo and veggies and my levels were more than fine.

we are here for you Chat Icon

Re: Just found out I have GD

I had GD and just gave birth to my DD two weeks ago. I have to say I was really afraid of the diet and the changes when I was diagnosed but I found that once I started testing my sugar levels it was easier to control than I thought. Definitely talk to the nutritionist but I found that a lot of it was just kinda trial by fire.

It's definitely easier than it sounds, don't worry you'll make it though! Oh and don't be afraid about having a 10 pound baby. My DD was born 7lbs 12oz and that was 3 days prior to my due date.

If you have any questions feel free to message me anytime!

Awwww, thank you girls. I really appreciate it. I don't know what my numbers are. The doctor wouldn't say just that they were pretty high and that I indeed have GD! He just wants me to go carb free until I see the nutritionist, which is on Friday. I called him just a minute ago and they said to "limit" the carb foods like fruit, beans, etc., the healthy carbs, but absolutely no pasta, bread, cake, cookies, candy, etc., all the bad carbs. Thanks for your meal plans I'm going to bookmark this so I can incorporate some of your ideas into my own. So how does this finger pricking thing go? I'm supposed to get everything on friday. I'm going to Diabetes Education Center in Mineola. Has anyone been to them? They seem very nice over the phone. I'm just nervous because I'm new to this. Once I'm educated and have a plan, I will be fine. The good news is that the baby is doing great! He's weighing 2lbs 6oz and everything seems to be right on target. It's going to be my goal to keep it that way Chat Icon

You have t have some carbs. What you shouldn't be having is white bread, white flour, refined sugar, sweets etc.

Eat whole grains, veggies, protein, and limit yourself to 2 servings of fruit a day

I was told by my nutritionist NOT to go carb free, your body still needs carbs otherwise it will become ketonic (like in the Atkins diet) and that is really bad for your baby. You want to eat whole grains. Incorporate a protein or fat with every carb you eat because protein and fat slow the absorption of the carbs into our blood so it helps keep your blood sugar lower...hope that helps a little

If I am staying under 180 grams of carbs a day, is that good? I barely failed the 3 hour test after that 100 gram drink in 5 minutes... I can't imagine 180 grams spread throughout the day would be so terrible, but I have no idea...

I'm only allowed 120-135grams a day.
Plus 1 medium/large or 2 small fruits a day.

I'm what they would call active.

When are you seeing the nutritionist? Have you found out what exactly gd is and how it can affect you and your baby?

no they want me to sign up for 2 different classes before they let me see the dietician 1 on 1 ... i see my regular doctor next week, the classes will probably both be the week following that...so I probably dont get 1 on 1 with the nutritionist for another 2.5 weeks (ill be 32 weeks already) im so annoyed and frustrated.

How active are you? I do 30mins of walking m-f on the weekends its about an hour. plus i do 30-50min of prenatal pilates 2-3 times a week. I'm asking because if its similar to mine I can give you the diet/guideline my nutritionist gave me

I probably need to exercise more. Before getting pregnant, I exercised at least 5 days a week, for at least 30 minutes per day. I ran 3 miles at least twice a week, plus did jillian michaels dvds and other workout dvds.

Right now, I walk on an incline for an hour a week. I also do a 45 minute prenatal yoga workout once a week. Then it is just general housework and sometimes on the weekend, walking outside type activities. Hopefully, I will start swimming soon. But yeah, not nearly as active as i was before.

welcome to the GD club.. so many recently. I was told to have about 200 g of carbs, and nearly 2200 calories- i cant get anywhere nearthat.
I cant eat 6 meals a day either. I do more of three meals with 1-2snacks per day, and snacs tend to be about 20 g carbs or less. Feel freeto fm me if you would like about anything I went to Winthrop diabetes center.

Re: Just found out I have GD

I think you have the wrong idea about managing your diet. Just because you have GD doesnt mean you eliminate all carbs. I had GD and was able to manage it with a diet. You can eat fruits, beans etc. just in moderation and in combination with other foods. I remember I felt so overwhelmed when I found out I had GD. I thought the same way you did but then I saw the nutrionist and she put everything in perseptive. Its really not that hard, and like I said, you can eat carbs. A typical day for me included:

Breakfast: scambled eggs, toast (WW wheat bread because it had low carbs) and a cup of coffee

lunch: PB and J

Dinner: chicken breast, white rice, beans and some sort of green vegetable. The key is to eat a lot of greeny veggies.

snack included: 2 fruits during the day (avoid oranges, they are high in carbs and make sure to eat the fruit during the day and not the first thing you eat in the morning or the last thing you eat at night)

I also had some crackers and cheese for snack.

You will see what works for you. Dont feel defeated, trust me, you can do it!

Re: Just found out I have GD

Hi all with GD. Question: I've been doing really well with my numbers with just diet, but the past couple of days I've been really sick and I've noticed my #'s are going up even though I'm still eating perfectly. I read online this is normal and can be due to being sick. But I was wondering if anybody else had this and how you maybe you kept your #'s down?

TIA

Re: Just found out I have GD

Why is your doctor telling you eliminate carbs? You needs carbs. They're very important. What you do need to do is to limit them and spread them out throughout the day. I actually have to test my urine for ketones every morning to make sure I'm getting enough carbs.

I have glucose intolerance, which is treated the same as GD. I can have 30 g of carbs for breakfast, 20 for a.m. snack, 45 for lunch, 35 for afternoon snack, 50 for dinner and another 30 or 35 for evening snack. It's trial and error. You'll figure out what your body can and can't handle. I eat whole grains and lower carb wraps/pita/bread. I still have fruit and yogurt. I eat a lot of peanut butter and sun butter. The diet really isn't that bad. At this point, make healthy choices, but don't eliminate carbs especially not until you speak with a dietitian. Good luck. Chat Icon

Re: Just found out I have GD

Joining the club...Dr. just told me I have it on Friday. I failed 2 of the 4 values. I will call the perinatologist on Monday and get the name of a nutritionist. Any recommendations in Suffolk county for the nutritionist?
