Re: Calling your pet your child (a vent)
I don't have a dog but my parents do and I call her my sister---I don't have siblings and I love saying that. I also talk to her about "our parents." Maybe its weird but I could care less.
Your family should recognize he is your baby! He happens to be a super cute one too

Re: Calling your pet your child (a vent)
Growing up I called my cat my sister (and I have 2 humans sisters).
Now DH and I have a DD, another DC on the way, our cat (female) and dog (male).
I refer to myself as "mommy" to human children and pets, the same as Dh is "daddy".
I even call my dog "my only son"
I call both my sisters pets nieces and nephews. My one sister just got married and doesn't have kids yet so for holidays I buy her puppy presents.
They are family. I don't see the problem.

yes i have two kids one human one animal!! love them both the same
I'm sure this is drama and no one will agree with me since this is the pets board but, how can u say you love your pet and your child THE SAME? You can't really mean that, I hope.
I have a dog and cats. I love them very much. It does not even remotely compare to the love I have for my actual children.
Sorry.

Re: Calling your pet your child (a vent)
I am ashamed to say i used to be that person ...i have had dogs all my life growing up ...one bf bought me a dog who i loved but she wasn't a child to me even though this dog followed me everywhere . It wasn't until my dh took me to pick out a pup my first fur baby my lil yorkie Bella a couple of years after we adopted Mia my second fur baby who we just had to put to sleep yesterday after only three short years....i just had a baby girl last June and love all my babies . If people don't understand don't get upset it is just because they never truly loved a pet ...like i said i loved my dogs growing up but when you get that one pet that u truly bond with you will never know what it is to feell ike they are your fur babies/ children.

Awww don't let it bother you. Unfortunately not everyone gets to know what it's like to love your dog like a member of your family. It's only their loss!
ITA!
We call our dog our son and we refer to my parents and in-laws as his grandparents. Luckily, both of our families are animal lovers and they treat him like family. However, we get lots of from friends. Whatever, it's their loss!

Think of it this way: You adopt. You bring this new bundle home. You take care of it, you love it. It loves you. It has a personality. It needs to be taken care of. You comfort eachother. You spend a lot of time together. You have a bond.
Am I talking about a human child or a cat/dog? Could be either.
I had my cats before my DD was born. When my one cat died suddenly of a heart problem right before his 4th birthday I was devistated. DD was 1 1/2 years old at the time. I cried for weeks. I still get upset when I talk about losing him.
Your cat or dog is part of your family and you care for it like a child. Why is it impossible to love a pet as much as you love your human child?
If that is how NoStressMom feels then that is one lucky pet.

I feel the same way you described about my own pets but imo there are degrees. Idk, good for those pets I guess like you said but I think it's a statement I could have swallowed better before I had actual children.

Re: Calling your pet your child (a vent)
We are mommy and daddy to our dogs.
BUT... I don't expect anyone to feel they are a "family member" to my dogs.
One of my friends used to call them her "furry nephews". That was cute!

Re: Calling your pet your child (a vent)
Umm .. when referring to my unborn child, I ask my cats if they are ready to be big brothers or a big sister (I have 3 boys and a girl)

Haha! Just today I said to my dog, "You want another sister, don't you? You want to be Mommy's only boy!"
