I saw this before work this AM.... I can't believe the mixed advice the "trained" staff at BRU, BBB, and Target had! some said bumpers were safe!

Its so scary because a lot of people rely on the help of sales staff....

Re: Today Show Report on Bumper dangers

This is scary. My grandmother bought us the bumpers that match our bedding set. I feel so bad, but I feel like I need to return them! My mother rolls her eyes at this sort of thing, you know the whole, "You had bumpers in your crib and you're just fine" thing. But I don't care, I'm not risking it!

You can reply to your mom, well isn't it a coincidence that number of SIDS cases were higher back then too." It is amazing how many mothers on youtube and other places still buying the overly expensive bedding and bumpers for their baby. As pretty as they are .... Oh my baby will bang their head is what they say. The reason why the stores still sell them ladies is to make money. Since eliminating bumpers is a good preventative way to avoid danger it does not guarantee. Why do you think cigarettes are still out there? They could put all the warning labels on them and they are still sold. If there is money to be made lobbyists will find a way.

Just crashing, but I remember the same thing. WE decorated the baby bedding with the expenisve blanket, bumper and sheets. We took lots of pics, but this was when the baby was in our room in the bassinet the few couple of month. When the baby went in the crib we took everything out.
We were lucky to have another DS and used the same theme, but what we did was got a pole to go on the wall for the blanket to hang on. Looks great and we feel the expensive set didn't go to waste.

Just an FYI... we NEVER used bumpers for either boys and they're fine

Re: Today Show Report on Bumper dangers

I have the bumper up on top of the hutch her DD's room as decoration for now. It's pretty. Chat Icon We use the breathable bumpers on her crib.

When I switch her bed to a toddler bed, I may put the bumpers on it, 3/4 of the way around. By then it'll be safe and I won't have to worry about her climbing out of the crib by using it to step on since it'll be a toddler bed. Just a thought for anyone who wants to keep theirs.

My mom is always using the line "we used it with you and look how good you came out". I simply try to remind her that I have worked in the Pediatric ICU many years, and while I may have come out just fine, she just didn't know the babies/children who die or who have permanent brain injuries from stuff like this. Same thing for helmets, proper car seat use, etc.

I've actually also read that breathable bumpers shouldn't be used as well. No need to have anything extra in the crib for infants.

We didn't put DD into the crib until she was 9 months old Chat Icon

She slept in the rock n play in our room until then. By 9 months, the crib already had to be lowered to the lowest setting since she could pull herself up and we could use the breathable bumpers.

You definitely don't need anything in there if you use the crib before that.

Those couples need to keep in mind that they're asking the advice of salespeople. Their entire job is to get expectant parents to buy stuff. Just because it's sold in a baby store doesn't mean it's safe; we all need to do our own research.

Why are bumpers dangerous now?

They restrict air flow around the crib.A young baby can roll into them and not be able to get out of the position and suffocate. An older baby can use them to try and climb out of their crib.
