AJ's Alpha projects : Letter P is for Purple, Parrot, Puppet
Ok so the puppet is more like a pigeon than a parrot!
I have to say Craft Needles are the coolest things EVER! Watching your 3yr old carefully thread a needle is freaking cool! The patience, the determination.... just amazing!
Enjoy

Re: AJ's Alpha projects : Letter P is for Purple, Parrot, Puppet
Thanks. This project involved a power tool. LOL I drilled holes into the P for the twine. She got to help me by holding down the letter. She thought she was so cool. She took it so seriously and cleaned up, directed me and of course she encouraged me. Good Job Mama. LOL
This one we also learned (she learned) how to make purple. The side of the P you can't see right now, we painted purple by mixing blue and red. She thought that was awesome so she kept mixing more and more.
We painted glue then put purple construction paper on the side you can see. Its not neat, but she did it.
This project actually took us more than one day. One day for the letter (pre drilled). 3 days for the bird (skeleton, feathers, details like feet, head, eyes, beak), then another day to put the bird to the letter (drill and thread). But those 5 days spanned about 2 weeks because we got busy with other stuff.
I think it came out cool

That is awesome!!! I want to do something like this (project for every letter of the alphabet) with my boys during the summer when school is out for my older guy!
Where do you get your ideas for the projects?

Where do you get your ideas for the projects?
Honestly from AJ.
I ask her. What starts with P. We work ahead so we start with saying the sound over and over. P p p Puppy? “no” P p p Parrot “Like Rio!” then we watch Rio. Haha Next day P p p “PURPLE!” well alrighty then. Purple isn’t a thing but I can make a purple parrot I guess. I usually stop at two. I do the Sound and word question for awhile until I get the same answer at least twice. Then I stick with that. We took her out with us and she saw puppets on strings and thought it was the coolest thing ever. She didn’t want to stop playing with them. So my hubby said “purple parrot puppet, please?” I was going to use just plain sticks but found the Letter P for $0.05 at Michaels.
The rest I just spend my free time thinking of AJ projects (its my job according to her). We have Q already done. A coworker’s wife is a big quilter so she made AJ a mini quilt 8X10 and I will sit with AJ and we’ll sew a patch onto it after she writes her name onto it. So she can be hands on.
I make AJ work on all projects. Sometimes they come out super cool and neat like the Jelly fish and people SWEAR mama did all the work, but she had a LOT to do with that one. Sometimes they come out funky like her Horse Hat Hand Puppet (very messy) or this parrot which doesn’t look like a parrot at all! The feathers are a mess! But SHE did it and that’s important to me.
You can google any letter and say “Kids Crafts for Letter X” etc. I got a neat idea to make an ‘X-ray’ of her hands with paint. Another site used q-tips to make bones. There’s cute X-rays of Foxes too. I concentrated on the harder letters. Easy letters like C for Cat Clock were more just implantation than creative.
It was a chore the first few letters but once I got into it and worked ahead it got SOOOO much easier!
I think we’re ending with R so we’re making a Red Rocket out of paper towel and toilet paper rolls then painting it all red. But I’m not 100% positive we’ll do R so I’m holding off.
We have to do this all over again next year with her new teach (I’m moving her) so I’ll have to come up with new ideas!!!
