How to break up with your OB?

So DH and I have decided to leave our OB since they're billing me in correctly (told them 4 times called my insurance company too) and gave me an extremely hard time when I asked for the dr to call me back when she gets back from vacation.

I like our dr but kind of hate her staff. How do I break up with her. Pretty much I just need to get my medical records and I already have an appt with a new dr at the end of the month.

Has anyone ever broken up with their dr and how did that go?

Just request your record. You might need to sign a form. then make copies of the records to give the new OB. That way you have a copy. If you give them to the new OB they can't give them to you later because they are from another Dr.

Re: How to break up with your OB?

I left my old doc at 8 weeks along, I did it at my last appointment w/ them b/c I wanted copies of my records before I left. I was honest w/ them and explained my frustrations, and that I wanted to be with a smaller practice. They were understanding, at first it seemed like they were trying to change my mind, but then they just left off by saying if it didn't work out with the new practice that I was always welcome to come back. So, I really left off on good terms, and I'm glad I addressed it rather than just stop going there and leave them wondering. Good luck!!

Re: How to break up with your OB?

When DH left his GP's office to move to the practice I go to, they gave him SUCH a hard time!! Even though he signed for his records AND we paid for them, they didn't send them to us -- they sent them to the other doctor's office. They made things as absolutely difficult for me as they possibly could. When I told them we didn't release the records to the other office, we paid to have them released to US, they tried to charge me again. I had a mini conniption on the phone and they finally agreed to send us a copy.

So my suggestion is to make it as non-confrontational with the staff as possible. Just request the records (and have them sent to you -- if you have to pay, you might as well get them and then you can just copy them and hand them to a new doc) and express your reasons either in a letter to your OB or in a conversation with the doctor, not the staff.

Agreed.

eta: I switched practices for this pregnancy and sent my midwife an email. I liked her a lot but had some reservations about being in the same hospital for #2. A lot depends on your relationship with your doc though.

I'm in the process of doing that now. I called last week to have my records faxed over to the new doctor, and I just called the new doctors office today to see if they received them and they still haven't Chat Icon So now I have to get on the old office's case to get them faxed over asap. I guess they don't give priority to helping patients who are leaving them Chat Icon I don't think all offices operate like that but make sure to get a copy of your records or have them sent to your new doctor far in advance of your first appt. with the new doctor.

You just have to sign a form to request your records, whether you do it at your old OB's office or the new one you choose. I just did it at the new one, I filled out and signed the paper and they faxed it over to the old office to get my records.

I broke up with my OB at 20 weeks. I just requested my records from the office staff and never looked back.

Never said anything to the Dr and the Dr never called me to see why. (dr is a family member of a close friend)

Re: How to break up with your OB?

I just called requesting my medical records, my dr is out on vacation and will not return until next monday, the front desk said they needed to speak with the dr who is covering for her. I have about 2 weeks until my next appt and she said it does not take long to make the copies but I do have to pay .75 a copy and I can get the copies right then and there.

Re: How to break up with your OB?

I left my OB at 37 weeks pregnant. I phoned the office and told them I am coming in tomorrow and I need a copy of all of my records. When I got there they said that they needed to know where I was going. I refused to tell them. They said I had to pay for my records. I explained that I want a second opinion on a few things. They then said ohh ok we cant charge you then and gave them all to me for free.

Re: How to break up with your OB?

When I broke up with mine this PG, the current dr just had me fill out a form saying I needed my records. About a week after I filled out the form, they called to say they were ready for pick up and how much I needed to pay.

Re: How to break up with your OB?

Just request your records and let that be it. If you feel it's necessary write the doctor a letter and explain why.
