Needing advice from GD ladies

Just failed my 3-hour gtt test. Already scheduled to follow up with diabetic specialist on monday. Any words of encouragement or words of wisdom to someone newly diagnosed- who is absolutely hating herself right now? Thanks. All appreciate..

hmm... i didn't really gain any weight in the 3rd tri, never ate so healthy in my life, and continued many of the good habits I learned even after I gave birth! weight came off really fast too. Chat Icon

Not sure if you are overweight to begin with but my sis lost 25 lb during pregnancy. Stinks to have it but at least it was a little perk.

I was shocked when I was told I had GD, I never in a million years expected that to happen to me. It will take a little practice but you'll get the hang of how and what to eat. The nutritionist I met with was a Godsend. I just kept reminding myself that any deprivation or inconvenience I had to deal with was all for the baby. That made it easier to deal with. Hang in there, you can do this. Chat Icon

Sorry you failed. Just know its not your fault and it doesn't matter how you were when you found out. I didn't eat sweets and watched what I ate and still failed. It gets some getting used to but all in all it's really not that bad.

You will see what your body can tolerate eating without your sugar going high. For me rice isn't a problem oddly where for someone else it may.

As long as you prepare food and eat steadily you will be ok. I have gone out ,for dinner and even had a little dessert and my numbers were ok. Totally diet controlled.

Don't feel bad either your body is just accommodating for another human and it just happens to make more than some other people. Chat Icon

Re: Needing advice from GD ladies

Crashing....I was devastated when I was diagnosed with GD my first pregnancy. I felt guilty, like I did something wrong and my body failed me. I couldn't stop crying.

First and foremost, it is NOT your fault! It's also not so terrible either, and I'm sure you will feel much better once you speak to the diabetic counselor.

You will go over your diet and the counselor will put you on a modified diet. I was lucky that with both pregnancies I was able to control my sugars with diet alone and did not need medication. The counselor will show you how to monitor your sugars and give you a testing kit.

I had to test my blood 4x a day, first thing in the AM (fasting #), two hours after breakfast, two hours after lunch, and two hours after dinner. The finger prick is not as bad as I was afraid it would be and ended up becoming second nature (albeit annoying).

On the plus side, it forced me to eat a lot healthier than I would have had I not been diagnosed with GD and I ended up only gaining 13lbs my first pregnancy and 18lbs the second pregnancy.

Both DS and DD were average sized babies (7lbs 7oz and 6lbs 15oz, respectively) and were 100% healthy.

If you have any questions, please feel free to FM me!

Re: Needing advice from GD ladies

I recently failed 1 part of the 3 hour GTT and was diagnosed with glucose intolerance. It's treated the same way as GD so there really isn't much of a difference. It sucked to fail, especially since I'm healthier this time around. I wonder how I passed the 3 hour with DS, but failed with this pregnancy.

The diet isn't too bad, but it's not fun testing my blood sugar 4 times per day. I'm less than 2 weeks into the testing and it has definitely gotten a lot better. I cried several times and had trouble testing my blood sugar at first. I've gotten used to it. It's stressful at first, but it will get better. Chat Icon

I know exactly how you feel. I was so depressed when I found out I had GD. But, honestly, it's really not that bad. Testing your blood sugar will get annoying, but keep telling yourself 'it's not forever'. And you'll get used to the diet too. I have a HUGE sweet tooth and if I can do it, anyone can. Re: Needing advice from GD ladies

Its not your fault!

My sister just found out she has GD and right now they're just monitoring her GD with blood readings and diet.

Her dr said theres nothing you could do to prevent it, sometimes your body just makes enough insulin for yourself. Dont be so hard on yourself.
