Kitchen in the front or back of the house
Which do you prefer? Have it located in the front of the house with a front yard view or back?

The style of colonial we have the kitchen is actually in the middle. It's inbetween the dining room and the second living room. The window overlooks the side garden, part of the backyard.

I happen to like a kitchen off the backyard. That is the current set up I have now and I love it.
My parents have their kitchen sort of in the middle of the house and their den is off the backyard.
My sister has a similar set up.
I am ok with that but still prefer in the back.
I am not a fan of walking in the front door to a kitchen though.

I prefer it in the back. I like having a deck off the kitchen... makes for easy summertime entertaining (access to grill, etc.). A lot of people like a view of the backyard, too, in order to keep an eye on kids in the yard.

My kitchen is in the front of my house. I don't necessarily have a problem with it, but I would definitely prefer a backyard view!

I have it in the back of the house, and I grew up with the kitchen in the back of the house.
DH's childhood home has the kitchen in the front of the house.
Actually, I would never even have thought to compare them until this thread! I like both - but if I HAD to choose - would say back of the house.

Back of the house
Easy for grilling/entertaining in the summer
Also when the kids are older so I can keep an eye on the kids when they are playing outside.

OUrs is in the back and I like it that way.
I grew up in a ranch and you entered in the kitchen. I don't mind a front kitchen, but not as your entry point.

This, except we have a center hall dormered cape w/all br's upstairs. 1 kitchen window looks directly into the driveway and at our neighbors, the other (where the sink is) looks out to our garage, patio and most of our backyard. For this particular house, It doesn't matter to me if I only see part of the backyard b/c I can walk 2 feet into the family room which is a wall of windows.

Ours is in the back of the house. . . I can't think of a house that has the kitchen in the front. . . . . . . . . I'm trying to picture it. At my parents house their kitchen is in the middle.

My kitchen is in the front. I don't hate it.
But for practical reasons with a child, I would prefer for it to be in the back and for the Summer with the patio. I feel we never eat on our patio because of this.
It's not a deal breaker though.

A lot of traditional capes have the kitchen in the front. My sister's house is like this - you walk into a center hall, and the kitchen is the room off to the right.
Also, Levitt style homes also have kitchens in the front.

Mine is in the back and when we redo the house it will stay in the back. I am a fan of the great rooms and like the idea of the 2 main rooms in the house looking into the back yard.
