Would you feel comfortable driving 3-4 hrs by yourself at 5 months?
I'm not sure what to do. My friends baby shower is coming up but the shower will be about 3 hrs away and that's if there's no traffic. I'll be five months by then and not sure how I'll be feeling. I'm not used to driving that far by myself to begin with, especially with the traffic going through the city area and over bridges. We also only have one reliable car which DH needs for work that day so it would mean making the trip in a car that possible won't even make it that far. DH doesn't want me to go and said he' be really worried about the car breaking down and I'm leaning towards not going but I feel really bad missing it. Do you think my friend would understand if I just shipped her gifts to her mom so she would have them at her shower but skipped the long drive by myself?
I looked into taking the train but because shes so far away it would mean leaving my house at like 6 am just to get there between the LIRR and then Amtrak with another transfer in NJ and then a cab ride. And then Id have to do that alll over again to come home. so that option is out.

i wouldn't mind driving at 5 months prego. i would, however, mind going in an unreliable car.
Your friend will understand why you can't make it

5 m as in around 20 weeks or around 25 weeks?
I'd probably do it if my m/s would ever go away.
We're doing a 10 hour drive when I'll be 21 w but it'll be me, DH, and DD. I hope my ms is gone by then. Ugh.
Can someone go with you?
If you're going to have a baby in this car and it's that unreliable, you may want to get a new one.

I don't have anyone who can go with me. I wouldn't mind the distance so much if I was with DH but he has to work and I don't want him to take off just to drive me all the way there and then wait around for the shower to be over. Plus he's trying to save up his vacation/personal days for when our baby comes.
We do plan to get a new car, we just won't have it by the time of the shower in a few weeks.

I drove 8 hours upstate by myself at around 4 & 1/2 months but I also had a reliable car to use. I dont know how I would feel about doing it in an unreliable car.

it sounds like your issue is not the fact that you are pregnant, but the unreliable car and unfamiliarity with driving this route. i wouldnt drive that far with an unreliable car, pregnant or not pregnant.
otherwise, i think you would be fine to drive at 5 months barring any medical issues.
i would just tell your friend that you dont have transportation to the shower.

this exactly! I'll be making a trip to Virginia (w/o DH, just my sis & mom) when I'll be roughly 24 weeks and I'm hoping that the 7 hour drive doesn't bother me.... if I had to worry about the car breaking down there is definitely no way I'd go!

I would absolutely go, but I was feeling fine at 5 months.
I'd make DH take the unreliable car.

Could you switch with DH for the day? If he breaks down on the way to work, it'll suck, but not as much as you dealing with a breakdown. If not, can you rent a car for the day? You could probably get something on Priceline or a Zipcar super cheap. That distance at 5 months wouldn't bother me. I'm actually doing the same thing for my sister's wedding, but I know my car is reliable and safe.

Why can't your DH take the other car or carpool with someone to work that day?

My only issue if I was in your situation would be the unreliable car. Aside from that I would definitely go.
Is there someone else that is going that you could ride with? How come your DH absolutely has to take the reliable car that day?

if you don't feel comfortable, i'm sure your friend would understand. it's definitely doable though. i drove by myself to CT then MA and then back to NY at 6-7 months pregnant.

Why cant DH take the unreliable car?
