Sleeping On Your Back

I forget from DD. When do I have to stop sleeping on my back?

Funny I usually don't sleep flat on my back, unless of course I'm pregnant, lol.

When do I have to really make an effort to not wind up on my back (unless there's a good reason for it Chat Icon )

Re: Sleeping On Your Back

I dont really know I am 34 weeks and my body just naturally rolls me on my back no matter if I go to sleep on my side I wake on my back.
My OB said its ok cause your body will know if you are uncomfortable and you will flip.

Re: Sleeping On Your Back

I think they recommend in your second trimester. I also heard that it is fine to sleep on your back so I guess it's what you take it for. In my pregnancy books they all said that if they baby was pressing on the artery they are concerned about then you will naturally change positions. I still always sleep on my side though. Counting the days till I can sleep on my stomach again.

The same thing happens to me every night. I always wake up on my back, switch to my side, and wake up on my back again.

Re: Sleeping On Your Back

I am an exclusive back sleeper so this has been tough for me! I think around week 20 you should try to start making more of an effort to sleep on your sides (preferably left). I noticed now when I wake up on my back my hands are numb/tingly from circulation so I switch to my side and I feel better immediately.

Re: Sleeping On Your Back

At thispoint sleeping on my back is the only way I can sleep. Obviously my stomach is out and when Im on my side my ribs ache and feel like they're going to cave in and my back hurts from my stomach pulling it forward. Im 35+ weeks and all I do is toss and turn all night. Chat Icon

My OB said that once the third trimester starts, you should stop sleeping on your back. The left side is preferable to the right.

With that said, I always wake up on my back. Sleeping on my side is so uncomfortable and tons of pillows does not help!

Re: Sleeping On Your Back

It's so bizarre because I ALWAYS sleep on my side and HATE sleeping on my back. Yet I wake up multiple times per night during pregnancy and I'm on my back!!! Just plain odd. PS I'm 23 weeks.

Re: Sleeping On Your Back

I make an effort to fall asleep on my left side. Sometimes I wake up on my back. My dr told me that my body will correct itself if I"m not sleeping right way.
