Another distance question..for those with long commutes

So I have a pretty long commute from Lindenhurst to Manhasset each day and I am pretty nervous about going into labor while driving, especially because I feel the chances are more likely because I spend up to 2 hours in the car commuting round trip.

Anyone else with long commutes think about this or any btdt moms deal with this? This will be my first

I have about an hour commute each way.

When I had my DD, I was off for the summer, so it wasn't a big deal.

This time, I am due in the fall and I am definitely worried about it. I am worried about going into labor at work, and then having to pick up my DD at daycare and get to the hospital. Not sure what I am going to do about it yet...I may stop working a week early this time around.

I may stop working a bit earlier b/c of my commute (or try to work from home if they allow me to)... the absolute LAST place on this planet I would want to deliver my LO is the A train!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon My train ride is roughly 45 minutes each way every day, it's always crowded so going into labor would not be ideal!

I am more nervous about the distance from my house to my hospital (in NYC) so I am hoping I go into labor at work cuz it's closer!!

Im def. worried about the same thing. I commute on the LIRR and it's 1h 20min door to door. I am going to work from home starting the end of May just to be safe (dr thinks I may go early).

Do you have the option to work remotely?

Thats why a lot of women stop working 2 weeks before their due date. Before that you should be fine...

Or try to work from home those 2 weeks before. Thats what I plan to do... I have an hour commute by car...

How far along are you?

as others mentioned, i plan on working from home the last week or two before Baby arrives.

a lot of women also start their maternity leave early for this reason. would you be able to do that?

Re: Another distance question..for those with long commutes

I drive 70 miles to work, each way. I have already talked to my bosses and they are fine with me working from home the last month of my pregnancy, as well as 1 or 2 days a week during the months leading up to it. Honestly, for me because my hospital is near my work, it would be better if i went into labor while here. But, the driving is VERY stressful and i just dont want to be doing it so close to my due date.

To reply to your other post, i live in Ronkonkoma and my hospital is in CT so i have about an hour drive (traffic permitting). When i went into labor with DD i was also an hour away, but in a different part of CT. My fluid had leaked and i was bleeding and the doctor told me to go to the hospital. So, i showered, blew out my hair, packed the rest of my stuff, and my mom drove me the hour to the hospital. I had DD about 6 hours later. You will have time to get there. For this time, If worst comes to worst and i feel like the baby is coming and i wont have time to get to CT i will go to Stony Brook.

Try either working from home for the 2 weeks or so before, or just stop working if you can.

Re: Another distance question..for those with long commutes

With DS I was planning on working till the week before I was due. Five weeks before I was due I was so done with commuting. I ended up working from home. I had DS three weeks before my due date. With this pregnancy I am just playing it by ear. I would love a chance to work from home again, but highly doubt it since its in the middle of a semester. I might take some time off to spend with DS before the baby gets here.

Re: Another distance question..for those with long commutes

Thanks guys..glad to know I'm not alone in worrying about the driving. Its tough to do my job in full from home but I will try to ask...as far as taking leave early, I definitely will if thats the only choice, I just hate to take away from time with the baby. Thanks again!!
