Birthing Plan

Have you laides made a birthing plan, specificially who you want in the room during active labor leading up to the pushing? I mean obviously DH will be my number one birthing buddy, but if he needs a break is there anyone else you would want in the room. I love my mother but she would drive me nuts if she was in the room with me. I really want my sister to be there but she lives in Virginia and by the time I start having contractions if I tell her to get on a plane 1. it will cost $750 for a last minute ticket and 2. I could give birth by the time she gets here.

What are you ladies doing?

I did not have a plan with my first DC (I won't this time either). DH was the only person at the hospital, so he was there the whole time (minus when I got the epidural...they made him leave for 15 minutes).

Re: Birthing Plan

I would not have a dead set plan. Brings change minute by minute and you need to be somewhat flexible.

I didn't care what happene other than for me and DS to be healthy

Re: Birthing Plan

DH and I took an L&D class at the hospital and we used a lot of what we learned there to come up with a very loose birthing plan.

I never planned to have anyone else in the room (it was impractical anyway since I'm OOS from my whole family) -- if I was in it for the long haul, so was DH lol.

As for other things... our main concern was no meds. It's what we both wanted. Everything else was just incidental to that. We were lucky and it was possible. But everything else, the nurse was *incredible* about helping with.

In our class, we learned about assorted categories of "choices" or alternatives that come up during the L&D process. We were told to prioritize them. Then pretend one by one, none of them were to happen. What was our #1 priority? How would we react if that couldn't happen? Together, we went through every possibility that we learned about and it helped us prepare for being completely unprepared and completely out of control of what was going on.

I was really fortunate that almost everything we'd hoped for happened. But it was really good to have that entire "plan" and the idea that it's all going to go out the window very quickly, too.

I'll have a plan for what I HOPE will happen but I know things can change and I'll have to be flexible. But I'm hoping to go as natural as possible. The only person I'll want in the room with me is my DH. My mom passed away and I'm not close with my sister. So my DH better not need a break because he's not getting one!

I have a very short birth plan. I have only 6-8 items on my list.

And DH will be with me the entire time, and he is the ONLY one I want there with me the entire time. I wouldn't mind my mom being there- but I know she doesn't want to be there. She passed out when I broke my arm. If she can't handle that... I can't imagine her in L&D Chat Icon

Re: Birthing Plan

My "birth plan" is very simple. I want DH in the room with me. My mother is welcome to come in, but when it's go time (to push) I only want DH in there.

I'd like to hold off on the epidural until 5cm's since they said that would be ideal for not stalling labor. But I'm very open to getting it before then if I can't take the pain (which is most likely lol).

Re: Birthing Plan

I don't have a birthing plan. What I've learned the first time is that you have to go with the flow. I've seen some insane birthing plans 2 or 3 pages long detailing things like what type of lighting & music is to be played.. I find those ridiculous. The only request is that only DH is there with me, other than that, that baby & I both walk out alive & healthy.

Re: Birthing Plan

Only DH will be in the room with me during very active labor and pushing. My parents and sister will def be in the hospital but waiting (again, they can hang out until it gets closer). My DH will not need a break bc I won't allow it!!! Hahahah if I don't get one, he doesn't get one!!!! But he's not that way so I know he'll be there the whole time. As for the rest of my plan, I don't really have one!! And don't plan to... I'm really leaving it up to the doctors. Whenever they feel it's time for an epidural, I'll be ready.

Re: Birthing Plan

My only "plan" is to have a delivery that is safest for me and the baby. In terms of who will be there, it will only be DH. I don't want an audience and don't care what our family members say. When I am sick I like to be left alone and being I will be really uncomfortable, I don't want anyone around me then.

ONLY DH during birth, my mom and even my MIL can come in beforehand, I have no problem with that.

Re: Birthing Plan

We are planning a drug free birth so I will have one but it will be short and flexible. DH will most likely be the only one with me, all of our family is 8 hours away. If my mom and sister get here in time they can be in the room during labor but I would not want them there when I am pushing. Here is what I will take with me, I hope it doesn't sound too nuts. I just wanted to outline what I think will help us complete a natural birth. It will also help in that we will not have to explain our wishes multiple times to multiple staff members.

*I would like to birth with as little intervention as possible, within the parameters of safety.
*Before any procedure or medication is given, my husband and I would like to have an explanation so that we may understand what and why things are happening to me and to our baby.
*I would like to birth without pain medication. Please do not offer medication, if I need it I will request it.
*I would like to be free to change positions, labor out of bed, and use the shower for comfort and to help labor progress.
*I would like intermittent fetal monitoring.
*I would like to allow my membranes to rupture naturally.
*I would like a saline lock. I would like to avoid having an IV unless medically indicated for my labor, not as a routine procedure.
*I would like to birth without episiotomy if possible.
*I would like delayed cord clamping.
*If I have a C-section, please use double suturing for the repair.

Baby
*Please delay all procedures such as Vitamin K, eye ointment, weighing and measuring until I have had a chance to hold and breastfeed baby.
*We do not wish to get the Hepatitis B vaccine for baby in the hospital.
