Lox?

Are we allowed to have lox or white fish salad? I'm craving either on a bagel!

Re: Lox?

I just had a bagel with cream cheese and lox but didn't look up if I was supposed to. I am sure it is fine. Everything in moderation.

Re: Lox?

You are not supposed to have lox. It falls into the same category of sushi!

Re: Lox?

Not supposed to, but I have had a little bit of lox on occasion. Chat Icon I don't like cream cheese or butter, so lox and whitefish salad are my go-to bagel toppings. We are going to my sister's for mother's day brunch, and I know I won't be able to resist just a little bit of each.

My doctor is jewish and she said lox/smoked salmon was fine even though I read online that it was one of the foods to avoid! I had a bagel with minimal lox once. It satisfied the craving and the baby still looked healthy on the sonogram! But now I am craving it again soooooo bad and I'm torn!!

Re: Lox?

All I wanted last pregnancy was lox and cream cheese on a bagel. It was an "absolutely forbidden" food per my OB... I had a friend bring it to me the second I got home from the hospital. OMG IT WAS DELICIOUS.

He said I could eat a lox and egg omelet as long as I heated the lox up / cooked it... but that's not the same.

There are pregnant women who eat sushi, if they are comfortable with it. What do you think pregnant women in Japan eat? The levels of mercury in tuna are more important than whether the fish is cooked - sushi-grade fish is very clean and safe. Plus, lox is either smoked or salt-cured, and is closer to cooked than sushi.

Re: Lox?

You are right, that it depends on the levels of mercury. However, I would rather be safe than sorry. It is only 9 months, I am sure most people would make the sacrifice for their little ones.

Re: Lox?

I actually just spoke to a nurse from my dr's office (called about something else and had to ask) she said better if I don't BUT it's ok once in a while as long as it's from a reputable place.
