Not to sound mean, but I don't see how a neighbor trying to improve their house in their own preference is rude.

You kind of came off to me as one of those meddling nosey neighbors. Who cares if they don't take their daughter out in their yard as much as you like? What does that have to do with their fencing choice?

Maybe that's why they put up such a high fence... for privacy from their neighbors. Especially when you write that you installed an elevated clubhouse and wish you had put it on their side so your child can snoop at them. Rhat just sounds spiteful, I'm sorry.

PVC is expensive and you hate it, but you asked here if you could be able to drill holes in it for your use on your side? no. You wouldn't be allowed to do that unless you received their approval and if you did, I would put it in writing

I think it's nice they invited you to their family functions. Neighbors can be a lot worse. You could have someone next door who takes no pride in their home.

Or honestly, you could install your own fence with all the "character" you want. Maybe set up an appointment with some companies people have used here.

Of course the comment about the elevated clubhouse was spiteful, what else would it be? Yeah, sure, I'll have my 2 yr old up there with binoculars and a walkie talkie Chat Icon

You are quick to defend what you feel is a neighbor trying to improve their yard but what if, hypothetically, a neighbor of yours put up a 6 ft striped neon pink and orange fence? Would that not bother you???

I have every right to not like their choice and to complain about it on here. As I said in my OP, I was sure that I would get comments like yours, but again, I could care less. I was venting and did exactly that.

I can see your side and it's good they didn't put up a neon fence. Just from what you wrote about previously seeing 4 houses down, I can see where some people would prefer the opposite.

You have a right to vent. I just figure if it bothers you that much you could put up your own fence that you like. I didn't see how it was selfish of them to put up a white fence when you don't pay their taxes or mortgage.

There could be things existing about your home that they don't like or something you do in the future that might not be their style. Just hoping this is the least of your problems with your neighbors.

Re: Neighbor fence vent!!!!!

Hmmm... I like white PVC fences! I can't wait to put one up! It would look much better than the ugly (IMO) wood plank fence that we have.

I'd prefer PVC over wood fence that after a few years looks faded/rotted ... Most people do not seem to keep up with the maintance food fences require.

I'd have to agree with you. If we needed a new fence on our property, I'd do PVC & I also wouldn't advise or ask for my neighbor's approval- sorry.

Re: Neighbor fence vent!!!!!

I put one in a year before we got our pool. I love it and prefer it over rotting wood ones or the one we had before, a dangerous wire one. In our town, you have to have a six foot fence due to child safety. Who knows, maybe they'll be getting a pool this summer. Or, they like their privacy (like me!). I had one neighbor be upset and sit outside while it was being put up, but another be so happy that he got one side of a fence for free. Just one of those things of living in suburbia.

Re: Neighbor fence vent!!!!!

I don't think white PVC fence is hideous at all. I think it gives yards a nice clean look to them.

I personally wouldn't want to see my neighbors yard. So I would put one up with no regard as to what they would prefer - not their decision to make if its on my property line.

I would be FLIPPING PISSSED OFF if they drilled into it on their side - that is not your property to use.

Re: Neighbor fence vent!!!!!

I agree that white PVC is a bit much...especially if it's a large yard. That is why I'm currently pricing wood grain pvc...it'll look like a wood fence but will be less maintenance. That being said, I just took some old, rotting trees down in my yard and the neighbor whose backyard is against my backyard complained to my tree guy that I was reducing the value of her home by removing my trees. So needless to say my very strong opinion is, what I do in my house that I paid for and on my property that I pay the taxes on is my business. As long as it's not harming anyone, I can do it. Or...the complaining neighbor can start paying my property taxes.

Re: Neighbor fence vent!!!!!

Thank you to everyone who provided me with some useful suggestions.

To the rest who feel/have felt the need to "justify" a 6ft white pvc fence, carry on. As an FYI, I never questioned their right to put it up, try reading the OP carefully.

I'm going to look into what I can plant to hide that monstrous bright white thing. It has no design, nothing. Lacks any character.Chat Icon I want to plant something though that wouldn't take up too much room since we have a shed and the grill on that side.

I think this is the real issue here. Some PVC fences are nicer looking than others. Plain white ones that look like boxes, with no decoration or decorative trim are much more invasive looking than decorative white pvc or any tan pvc. I think this is the main reason it looks so hideous...I cant stand a plain white pvc fence with no decorative border on it.

Re: Neighbor fence vent!!!!!

I wasn't justifying why I went with a 6 foot fence, but just shedding some light as to why they may need it. Once my pool went up, the neighbor who was upset at first understood since its code.

I find adding some beautiful shrubbery or trees in front really breaks it up. I have plain, no decorative 6 foot panels (and don't need to justify it) but the greenery around it really adds to the look.

Yes! This is exactly it. Tan would have been so much better. Or a 5 ft with a decorative border on top. Something. But this has nothing. Just plain and white.

Re: Neighbor fence vent!!!!!

OK.. I am TRYING to understand this!

Your neighbors had a fence, they removed THEIR old fence and put a new WHITE privacy fence out of THEIR pocket.

So you are not happy because it BLOCKS your view into their yard and you cannot see what the heck they do (the DD comment) and just don't like the style.

So far you have not contributed a dime into the project but you think they probably should have asked you for your input.

Are you serious?????

This is what I suggest.

You get YOUR OWN FENCE ON YOUR SIDE of the yard. You know the nice looking one that you think is ACCEPTABLE by your OWN standards.

Meanwhile, mind your own business. They did not put a white trailer as your view. You may not like what they chose but nobody goes around the neigborhood and complains about the new color siding a neighbors puts up. Especially if it is a POPULAR color/product. And call them SELFISH.

Maybe wonder why they put such privacy fence in the 1st place.

Sorry I was really trying to see your point in this but it just sounds silly. Maybe they don't like the color of your siding, or the way you landscape your home. Too bad for them right?
I agree with the other posters who suggested putting a "prettier" or different color fence in front of it.

Re: Neighbor fence vent!!!!!

This reminds me of the lady who knocked on our door as our 6ft PVC was being installed and told us how sad she was because we would be blocking all the air flow.... Oh and locking the view of the beautiful tree (which was my neighbors) And she didn't even live in my town, she just goes to church by my house.Chat Icon

Maybe because a tan fence or the ones with the lattice on top is a lot more money and not everyone can afford it.

That is true, but that is also why many people dislike plain white boxy pvc fences without any decoration, b/c they are much less esthetically appealing when they lack the decorative touch (and they are cheaper yes, but also look cheaper). They just look so invasive (the plain white square top pvc fences) IMO. But of course, any homeowner has the right to put up whatever they wish providing it is within code. However, when you live in an area with small properties when your fence will be looming in your neighbors tiny yard, it's pretty common for neighbors to not be happy with seeing a giant plain boring white wall outside their window. But as I said, of course, if you put up a fence within code, unfortunately that's the way it goes.

Obviously you haven't tried too hard to understand since you have made not one but two invalid and incorrect statements. Read carefully next time.

1. I am not unhappy bc it blocks my view of their yard. There was already a 5 ft fence there. I couldn't see into their yard. I am unhappy that I have to look at an ugly white wall that closes off my own yard. The DD comment comes straight from the grandma, not speculation on my part.

2. Show me exactly where I wrote that I felt that they should have asked my for my input. You can't huh? That's because I didn't write that.

Why bother posting if aren't actually responding to what was written but instead to what you erroneously want to believe was written.

Why don't you just put up a 6' fence with character then that you like and wouldn't mind looking at and add landscaping/vines/roses near it?

I don't get the problem.

Just get your own fence that you love and have it match their height. Then you will never have to see their fence ever again.

Well sometimes this cant happen. They may have such minimal space on that side that losing another foot won't justify doing that. Or maybe they don't have the $$ to put up a fence since they never planned on it. Or maybe the lot is so small that it just boxes the property in too much.

That being said, of course, if the person who put up the fence is within code, then unfortunately that's just the way it goes. She can be pissed but they can also put up whatever fence they want. But yes, it's pretty well known that fences being put up can cause disputes among neighbors.

A neighbor may not have a right to complain if the person who put up the fence follows code. But of course it's natural to have a response to seeing a giant white bright wall outside your window.

I'm not head over heels with PVC myself.

I just think people tend to forget that when you purchase a home, all you are buying is the HOME, and the area between and up to the property lines. You don't own any view, any passage of a breeze, or anything else, although that would be nice!Chat Icon
