I am not sure why anybody would say they are not known to treat people well. My family has used them for so many events as well as many friends and the service is always top notch and they are always wonderful. I recommend them to everybody.
I was going to say this. 2 of my friends got married there and both were beyond thrilled with everything. I have no personal experience dealing with them so i can't comment. I'm surprised to see all these comments!

We had a party planned for my mom the day of the hurricane and the place we rented out got in touch with us, letting us know that they were going to be closed and they would refund the deposit because it was on the beach and that was the end of their season.
THAT is the way to do business. THAT is the way to keep people coming to your establishment. Do they HAVE to do it? No, they could honor the contract to the letter. That's their right....but they'll lose more money going that route than refunding the couple's money.
Stupid choice on their part.

I live in Holbrook and never ever eat there. They are so over priced and I always found them rude. I'm not suprised either! Shame on them. I hope the couple wins in court and gets their money back plus damages!!!!!!!!

You should ask anyone who has ever worked for them. My gf has and she said they treat their employees like slaves. They have a HUGE turn over and are always looking for help.

I'm sure they are great unless you have an unfortunate/tragic/unforeseen incident happen. They will not accommodate you AT ALL. Let's just say they are heartless. For me, the true test of how a business treats its customers is when things DO NOT go as planned.

Wow, Im really surprised to see all the comments that people are not surprised to hear this. I've never heard of any issues until now. I even had DH's 30th brithday party at VL and didnt have any issues at all. Guess I was one of the lucky ones.

I was there for the first time for a wedding recently and I was embarrassed for the bride and groom at how poor the service was and how disorganized they were. I hope this couple gets their money back.

This is one of my favorite restaurants. We have all our parties there and they have all been outstanding. I will say though I have heard they are "hard" to work for and are definately not the hand holding type when planning an event.
I would love to see what the wedding contract said. From what I gathered, VL offered them to have the wedding party at a different date and the couple declined. While I feel for the couple and I would be totally bummed if it was me, I don't think any reception hall would be fully responsible for refunding the entire cost due to a hurricane.
Personally I would have done a party on my one year anniversary if people had to travel or just take half the money back.

Exactly! That money is peanuts to them. They own a friggin empire. It just shows what crappy people they truly are. It's amazing that all us locals heard the same things and feel the same way about them. Jerks!

They called this woman at 11am the MORNING of her wedding and did not do anything to accomodate her. AT LEAST offer the couple catering for the party they had at their house.
Horrible to offer only 1/2 the money back.

And we have had a few rude waiters there too!

We love the other Mama's (the one in the shopping center with the UPS store) and the same owners have the one in Oakdale. Yummy food and always very nice and accomodating in there.

Yes, they are very good. We get food catered from them also.
Mama Mia's, Saviano's, Joe's, Aagean's, Mulberry Street, Albert's, Mama Cucino's. All good places too.
