No, they scheduled mine at 19w.

Was this the dr or the tech that said that?

Re: Plus size moms...over 20 weeks pregnant.. question about scan

During my first pregnancy they told me that they had a hard time seeing everything because of my size. They sent me to Winthrop Prenatal where they had higher resolution machines for my anatomy scan and Winthrow was able to get everything that they needed to.

This pregnancy I was 65 lbs lighter and they still didn't get everything they needed to at the in-house sono, but they even have higher resolution machines now. I asked the doc (different doc then I saw in the same practice with my first pregnancy) if it was because I am overweight and he said no, it was more the baby's position.

I still went to winthrop prenatal for my 20week and they got everything they needed there. Honestly I think the difference is that they allow for more time to be spent. At my doc's office the sono takes all of 10 minutes, at Winthrop they take an hour and a half! They see everything they need to see because they have the patience to allow the baby to move and get into different positions!

me too! seriously I was in the most foul mood and this just put a HUGE smile on my face.

To OP....I dont mean to be too personal but what is considered plus size? Before I got knocked up I was a 10/12 depending on cut of the pants. I had to have a 16 wk sono but I'm not sure if it was a growth scan or not. It was a pretty extensive so I just assumed it was one. My OB sent me to Good Sam.

Re: Plus size moms...over 20 weeks pregnant.. question about scan

I was 80 lbs over weight to begin with when I was pregnant with DD and there was never a problem.

This time I was 40 lbs over weight and they haven't said anything yet.

I don;'t think they can hold back on this information at all - its your health- your information to know.

I am plus size 16/18 pp and gained 40+ lbs during, I had abnormal downs syndrome screening results so I had two anatomy sonos done- one around 16 or 17 weeks and another at 20 (both at wintrop perinatal- they were LONG sonograms - very thorough) because the baby is not as developed before 20 weeks so they can't see everything they needed to see sooner. Turns out I had a placenta problem so then I had monthly, bi monthly and eventually weekly sonograms in the doctor's office- not as long/quick sonos. They always were able to see what they needed to despite my size. It doesn't make sense to me to have a early anatomy scan because of your size- definitely question it and I'd consider changing doctors because if they are planning on doing the anatomy scan only at 16 weeks .. they are going to miss development that happens later by 20 weeks that they should be looking at Chat Icon and if they can't see your baby now, how will they track his/her progress as you get bigger???

Congrats and GOOD LUCK! Chat Icon

Im sure they would tell you. They usually tell people and scare them unnessesarily rather than not tell them and wait and see if there really is an issue.

My OB has regular machines but the peris machines are SO much better and you can see so much more detail. Maybe they just don't have the equipment they need.

I agree with the pp's! I was a sz. 22 my first pg and an 18/20 at the start of this one and the only problems they had with my anatomy scans were caused by the baby's position (at 19w & 20w). I would be inclined to think that maybe it has to do with the resolution of their equipment like some other posters mentioned Chat Icon

ETA: I didn't know that your are pg again - congratulations!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

hahaha...total horse shit! I was very overweight when I was PG with my DD last year and my growth sono was done at 21 weeks. The only time they will have a problem during the scan is if the baby is not in a good position for them to see what they need to see.

I would call your doctor out on it because it sounds to me like their machines are not the greatest quality and they are displacing the fault to your size.
