Re: Do you think 2y, or 3y, or even 4y olds NEED daycare/preschool?

My only contribution to this thread ( that hasn't been mentioned before)

is that NYS is now implementing the Common Core Learning Standards which are intensifying academic curriculum in Kdg. For example, students in K need to now count to 100 where before they only needed to count to 20! Everything is becoming more rigorous- less play time and more work and testing.

For that reason alone, I'm glad DD already knows her ABC's and counting to 40 from what she has learned in daycare.

I definitely think that starting at 2 children need something. I feel this way because now a days kids are in preschool or daycare much earlier. I think at 2 years old a playgroup a couple of times a week is fine if a child is not in daycare. Both my children started some kind of playgroup preschool by 2 years old. Where I live most kids are in preschool by 3 at least a few full days a week. By pre-k most of the programs in my neighborhood are full day and 5 days a week.

I agree. I work full-time (a teacher) as does my husband so we will definitely be sending my son to pre-k. As an educator I know that the new Common Core Standards being implemented as of the 2012-2013 school year are more difficult and rigorous than the NY State Standards were. We are implementing them this year in my school and it is an eye-opening experience. For this reason alone, it might be a good idea to look into at least pre-k because, as mentioned above, the new Kindergarten standards are high. What the kids were expected to know just a few years ago is now outdated. It used to be meeting grade level standards to leave Kindergarten reading at a level C but now D/E is considered meeting the standards. Expectations are being raised and the kids are going to be tested on it throughout the year. Kindergarten is no longer like we remember it. Chat Icon

This is kind of sad to me. Why does a child need to count to 100 in Kindergarten? And tested? Too much, too soon.

But I agree, PreK wouldn't hurt for this reason alone. This is setting some kids up for failure though if they don't live in a town with universal PreK and their parents can't afford to send them.

I couldn't agree with you more. I find the state of our education system VERY sad. Chat Icon And this is NOT a knock on teachers as I was one and realize we're all bound to standards and expectations which are completely out of our control.

I think the emphasis across grade levels is in all the wrong places, other important skills and subjects are left behind, and we're pushing children harder and harder and at a younger and younger age until they practically crack.

I truly believe that instead of creating a population of children who are excited about education and learning we have created a population of kids who are over tested, over stressed, and who have become so complacent about school and academics. As a teacher and a parent, that makes me sad. Chat Icon Chat Icon

All I have to say is every time I'm on here I learn something new. I never even heard of a 2 or 3 year old going to pre school. I thought it was optional at 4 & I didn't even know you had to pay for itChat Icon

No, definately not. Pre K at 4 is a good idea for socialization and adjusting to classroom routines.

It is optional at 4 - it is still optional for kindergarten too technically. Some districts offer a pre-K program so if eligible for that program, it would be free!

My son went to kindergarten identifying about half the alphabet. He had gone to preschool that focussed on social skills, problem solving, general background knowledge about ther world, story structure...numbers and the alphabet were NEVER drilled. Guess what, in second grade he is a beautiful reader and writer....meeting all the standards. People are often too hung up on teaching their children to memorize the alphabet and numbers without teaching them to think, respond and deal with the world around them. Its very sad. I am a teacher and sent my second child to the same preschool that makes learning the letters fun and optional, and yet teaches them so much more! My dd never went to school until four. I do not believe in trying to force children to aquire skills/concepts that they are not ready for while frustating them and squashing their desire to learn. I have seen it way too often.

One of my son's best friends did not start school or daycare until he started kindergarten and he was fine. Better than fine, he flourished and loved every minute.

Another of his friends knew the entire alphabet and all his numbers before the age of two! We were all so impressed. Now, as a second grader, he struggles in school, but reads almost as well as my son.

I think it totally depends on the KID AND PARENT.

Ds is in daycare at 2, shares well and can understand his speech.

Ds has a cousin who is the same age but with a SAHM who admits to being on the computer all day, has an early bedtime, and late wakeup so the parent can sleep late, the cousin doesn't share, is alot farther behind in speech, and even walking around stumbles alot.

I don't think that its because the kid is at home. Its the enviroment that is presented to them. SAHM's can plan playdates, and spend more time teaching their kids then alot of daycares would provide.

Oh dear. Glad I could provide drama for the boards. I didn't think my post was confusing as I was referring to a specific situation of a specific child and parent.

I never implied SAHM would give their child autism - a physical condition linked to abnormal biology and chemistry in the brain

I get what you are saying and I agree with you. Unfortunately as educators, we are being told that kindergarteners must leave kindergarten mastering many skills that used to be taught in first grade. Things are not the same as they were even just 3 years ago. While some children are developmentally not ready for it, as educators we are being forced to teach these new higher standards, then assess the children on them and then to top it all off, our own assessments are partly based on how well the children perform. The whole system is screwed up. Chat Icon Chat Icon

This is so sad. What happened to play, the true work of children? Children learn so much more through play than by memorizing numbers up to 100. The US keeps falling behind in terms of academics when compared to other countries yet policy makers keep pushing teaching to the test and it gets us nowhere. What happened to creativity, exploration, true problem solving?

I know it's not the teachers. I hate that I have to put my child in an educational system that has forgotten that children need to learn to think.

Anyway, as I said in my other post, my DS will be in a 3's program but socialization. He's 28 months and already knows his all 26 letters, all the letter sounds, and can count to 20. But all this was bc he shows an interest and learns through play, I would never push it on him.

My parents were teachers and never depended on school to teach us how to read and write. I think it does depend on the parents. I hope to be able to teach my kids as my parents did... Through high school and help even in college. Some of my best memories were reading on the couch with Mom, math with dad and then teaching my sister. She would even come to stay and quiz me in graduate school... And I her. We all attribute how far we got to the interest we all took in each other.

That being said... working super long hours I may send my kids to pre k. It'll make child care easier when one starts school... And I don't think it hurts. I just wouldn't depend on it.

I can't comment on socialization. I do enroll in classes for ds.

AS an educator myself, I see what you are saying. But fact of the matter is that higher level skills are problem solving, inferencing, and producing a well-organized response. These are the hard skills to acquire and a good preschool reaches its students in a way that makes them more productive thinkers. It gives them the background knowledge to succeed at more difficult reading/writigng and math tasks that are ahead of them. Learning the alphabet and numbers requires lower level thinking and can be taught in a slower manner with more concern about their developing minds. Why when my son finally learned his letters did he take off in reading? Because he has an amazing vocabulary, background knowledge and thinking skills. I am not suggesting not pushing our children ahead, I am merely suggesting reevaluate and prioritize the more important, more challenging skills.

i am sorry but that is the most ignorant comment i have read in a very long time...

just because your DSs cousins mother is on the computer all day will NOT reflect on that childs speech or his walking abilities. how different is that from saying all moms with autistic children neglect their child. there is NO difference in your statement.

i know PLENTY of children who have PT & Speech impairments, and OMG.. guess what their MOMS PAY attention to them, and a few of them had their children in daycare.

so i am curious, and don't take this the wrong way, but how you can blame a childs development on a parent who in your mind is neglectful? and what about those parents who aren't neglectful, but their childs development is delayed anyway...

ETA: i was going to say more, but i am beyond red right now, so i don't want to offend

Wow...this might be the overreaction of the year!

To bring autism into the conversation is a ridiculous reach. All she was doing was referencing a specific situation she is familiar with.

To say that the only parent in the house being on the computer all day and neglecting the child won't reflect on that child's development is insane. And to infer that a parent's neglect or attention will not have an effect on the child's development is equally insane. What you're saying is that a child will develop equally whether having zero interaction or constant interaction, which is not the case. Sounds like you were looking for someone to vent your personal frustrations at.

We're agreeing with each other. I'm just saying that I do think it's important to go to preschool to begin to develop some of these skills in a school setting. Especially as the standards are being raised.
