Gestational Diabetes Question

Can you get Gestational Diabetes from eating/drinking too much sugar while pregnant or is it something that you can just get? I ask because I was at a family function recently and I was drinking a Sprite and an obnoxious relative of mine passed a comment to me that I am going to get Gestational Diabetes if I keep drinking Soda Chat Icon I hardly even drink a lot of soda but I do on occasion. Lately I have had a sweet tooth and been eating a lot of candy…. now I am all freaked out.

Re: Gestational Diabetes Question

From what I understand, it's not caused by you eating too much sugar. I passed my 1 hour and I will fully admit to being a sugar addict. So if eating sugar gives you GD, I should have it Chat Icon Tell that relative to google before they make nasty comments about something they know nothing about Chat Icon

Re: Gestational Diabetes Question

Thanks to the OP for asking this question bc Ive been wondering myself! I take the glucose test in about 2 weeks and have been stressing myself out about the amt of sugar... Serious sweet tooth, but now I find myself trying to limit sugar a bit more simply bc of the weight gain Chat Icon

Re: Gestational Diabetes Question

I think you have to be predisposed to it. I had it with my first pregnancy. I do not have it with this pregnancy. I still have treats but now I can eat an ice cream cone or a reeces cup and test my blood sugar afterwards and it is within normal ranges. My body is able to process the sugars in a due amount of time this time around and wasn't able to in my first pregnancy.

Re: Gestational Diabetes Question

it has nothing to do with what you eat (to a degree). If you are not insulin resistant (or diabetic) you can eat a million candy bars and your body will product enough insulin to "cover" it. With diabetes - your body just doesn't produce enough insulin. Pregnancy can effect this - so you that is why there is an increase with some people. Especially if there is a family hx.

if you have GD you are more likely to develop DM when you are older...so it should be a little kick in your rear end to take care of yourself ( I went through it, and as a dietitian I really started to be cautious of bad behaviors)

I don't know if that's entirely true - I had gd with my first and was insulin dependent. I was not overweight, and had no family history, but I ate a large amount of sugar as part of my normal diet. I didn't have a balanced diet at all.

after I got over the shock of it, I began watching my diet and portions, even after I was pregnant.

I watched my carbs with the second pregnancy, saw an endocrinologist and a dietitian. Somehow I managed to pass a 2 hr and a 3 hr glucose test.

I think it's mostly genetic but then again if you live on sugar I'm not entirely sure that couldn't contribute. An occasional soda or candy bar isn't gonna give you GD though :)

I had GD. It has NOTHING to do with what you eat while your pregnant. GD is 100 % hormonal, you cannot give yourself GD because you ate a few too many sweets. I met all kinds of girls at the endocrinologist, all with GD. Not one of us was alike in eating habits or body type and yet we were all diagnosed with GD. You cannot keep yourself from getting GD nor can you give it to yourself.

Once I was diagnosed I ate perfectly, beyond healthy and watching every drop of food I put in my mouth and I still couldn't get my sugars under control, I needed insulin. Every time my hormones fluctuated my dose had to be adjusted. As soon as my DD was born I went right back to normal. GD is hormonal, NOT food induced.

It isn't genetic, I do not know anyone on either side of my family who had GD and yet I got it. It has to do with your hormones during pregnancy. And just because you had it with one pregnancy does not mean you will have it with other pregnancies.

I knew someone who did not have it with their first child, got GD with their second child, and then did not have it with their third. You have no control over it, it just all depends how your body is handling the hormonal fluctuations of pregnancy. My endocrinologist made it very clear to all of us pregnant ladies in the room that day.............you do NOT give yourself GD.
