I had no idea who he was (not a baseball fan at all, I admit it). Actually for a fleeting moment I mixed him up in my mind with Gary Coleman, until I remembered he was dead already.

I didn't because I've just never really followed sports. But DH was a huge fan of his when he was growing up. He was really sad about his death.

Oh yes.
My dad got me into the Mets in 1986.
We watched the world series together- i was 12.
Gary was my FAVORITE player.
I loved his curly hair!

of course   baseball was always a big part of my life growing up (esp. the Mets) and even now, my husband is a HUGE fan we also tend to go to a TON of Ducks games

Yes...my dad is a baseball fan and he took me to my first game in 1986 and schooled me on all the players.
Though, as a five-year-old, the last name 'Strawberry' seemed like the coolest name in the world
But yes, I knew who he was and got teary-eyed at the news of his passing.
The above reasoning is why Darryl Strawberry was my favorite player in '86. I love strawberries!
Yes, of course I knew who Gary Carter was (obviously, since I started the thread that he died). I was raised a Mets fan from the time I was born. My sister used to dress me up for games in all blue and orange. I was her little personal Mets mascot. Gary Carter was her favorite player. She had a Mets Cabbage Patch Kid named Gary.
So sad about his death. What a great player with a true love for the game.
ETA: I was 7 years old during the '86 World Series.

I think it depends on your age. I remember growing up watching Gary Carter and the Mets but I am sure the younger generation does not know who it is because he is not in the media all the time.
ITA. I knew who he was, but I guess I'm from the "older" generation now too I was a huge Mets fan in the 80's. Strawberry, Lenny Dystra, Mookie Wilson, Gary Carter....

I was 20 when the Mets won the World Series in 1986, and was at the ticker tape parade.

I did but barely. I knew he was a met from the 80's but couldn't tell you his age (besides approximating he was probably like 25/30 when he played?) or race or anything.
That's why I think all the fb posts about Whitney Houston being a drug addict and getting so much media attention while Gary Carter the beloved athlete is stupid. Obviously Whitney had much wider exposure. I don't think too many people over age 12 didn't know who Whitney was. It has nothing to do with how good they were.

Yes absolutely know who he is. Dh and I are huge Mets fans. He was such an asset to the Mets organization. Very sad because he really was very ill for a while. Huge loss for the MLB

Same here. Growing up no one in my family liked, watched or followed any sort of professional sports. In fact, we'd even change the channel when they started doing the sports broadcast at the end of the news.
I have some exposure to it now because dh is big a sports fan, but I still don't really pay attention because I have zero interest. Other than a handful of names that show up on TMZ from time to time I probably couldn't name more than a handful of currently famous athletes...

Yup, I know who he was....
Only reason being that my mom was pregnant with me during the world series, and while my parents were at game 6 at Shea, my mom went into early labor lol. It ended up being braxton hicks but my parents left right before the 9th inning, missing that memorable 10th inning with Gary Carter.
Oh my dad never lets me forget that
