painting a walk-in closet

If you have a walk in closet, did you paint it a color, or just white?

I am trying to decided between white or a light beige color. Dark enough to not look like dirty white, but not brown. it's not a large walk in.

This is close to the color of my bedroom area rug , bedspread & painted furniture. the bedroom is a slate blue. The closet will have a white metal organizer.

Also-what do you have on the floor? Right now the hardwood continues in from the bedroom, but it is a mess. Not sure if I should put carpet squares or tiles or just leave it.

eta-it would look something like this but with more stuff. Chat Icon

Re: painting a walk-in closet

All our closets are white. That way, if I repaint the room, I don't have to worry about the closet. I'll just leave it white.

That's why if I do color at all-it would be a neutral.

I am more afraid of it looking too dark than wanting to change it.

Being a walk in, the walls encounter wear & tear closer to a room than a closet so it will have to be repainted eventually anyway. I am painting now for that reason, not primarily to change the color.

It's an odd shape, so there is part that won't have clothes hanging--it is sort of a hallway, and then you make a left into the clothes part--the hallway part is wear it gets the dirtiest.

Re: painting a walk-in closet

My closet doesn't get a lot of wear and tear, just around the baseboard b/c I throw my shoes.

So then yeah, just go neutral.

We have carpet in our bedroom so it continues in the closet.

The hardwood is a mess? If you're concerned, I think your idea of carpet tiles is a GREAT idea/

It looks like something was previously glued to the floor. The smaller closets had some gross indoor-outdoor type carpet/mat that was covered in act hair, so I pulled that up immediately--it was previously glued, but wasn't really sticking anymore. The walk in may have had the same at one point.

My concern with carpet squares is that I'll have to vacuum. It is easier to sweep in the closet than vacuum, but DH ges dressed in there, so carpet under bare feet is nice.

The bedroom floor is fine, so since I am not planning on getting that redone, I don't want to have the closets done.

I find our closet (currently off-white) gets hand prints, and scuff marks from the hampers, luggage, things like that.

Maybe its not that bad--I don't know when it was painted last--this could be a 60 year old paint job--so in that case it held up great! Chat Icon

Yeah - if your BR is hardwood, it would be a a pain to lug out a vacuum just for the closets. Chat Icon

Mine is painted the same as the room and we have carpet in there.

I wanted to do a damask wallpaper, but after ripping it down in other rooms we banned it from our house.

Well, we have an area rug in front of the closets, it's just the the closet is L shaped and a little hard to turn the vacuum. i've done it once or twice, but usually we just sweep.

Thanks for all the ideas--I am am pretty sure I will make my decision in the paint store!

That's how my closet in my parent's house was, but it wasn't walk -in. I t was the same light blue the whole room was painted when it was built (dormer when I was 10). I painted the room white when I was 16 but the blue closet remained until my mom took over the room & renovated after I was married.

The room was painted 5 years ago & the paint isn't made anymore, so I can't do that here, but it is almost another room, so I think I want it to be another color.

white or cream colored. even a walk-in is a "small" space so you want to keep it bright!

Do something fun with it then, and remember that lighting can make a huge difference too. If your room is hardwood I wouldn't put carpet, maybe get a nice area rug to go in there too. If the room is light blue, pick a bold color that pops when you open the door and put good lighting in. I wanted to put a chandelier in mine if I was going to get the wallpaper lol Since it didn't happen I just stuck with the same color of the room but it's nice and bright and I hung a nice mirror in there and I have a station set up for all of my makeup and hair brushes etc... So I get ready in there now too.

Re: painting a walk-in closet

My walk-in has cedar planks on the walls about 3/4 of the way up on the back and side walls. Above that I painted white, and also the front walls where the doors are. The shelves are stained light cherry to match the doors.
The floor is hardwood carried over from the bedroom, but I put down a carpet.

My other closets are the same way, minus the carpet.

I would love a chandelier! I only have 7.5 foot ceilings & a 6 foot husband though, so it would be in the way. I do need to get some sort of light fixture. Right now it is a bare bulb, but I will do that, paint the door & get a new doorknob later.

The closet is L shaped & kidna of narrow for a walk-in, so I don't think area rugs will work. Maybe two runners? I never really thought about that. A mirror is a good idea too-I will have to see where it will work after the organizer is in. Thanks!

That's what I am thinking-- I love bold colors in closets, but that might be better for a reach-in, b/c you aren't IN it, feeling all claustrophobic I am a little concerned about finding a cream color that is cream, and not off white or peach or yellow.

OK- so now I have discovered the wide world of damask rugs! Chat Icon

So pretty! If I can find sizes/colors that work, this might be ideal, b/c I can take them into the bedroom to vacuum & can add color/pattern withouth being stuck with wallpaper.

Thanks for the ideas, folks!Chat Icon Chat Icon

I did Mom's walk-in Benjamin Moore's Linen White with white trim as she had moldings, shelves and baseboards. It came out beautifully.
