what are breathable bumpers for?

i read reg bumpers are no nos....and i registered for a breathable mesh one... but do i need it? me confused as usual! ty

I *think* its so that if baby gets too close to it and his nose gets too close it wont suffocate him. I could be totally wrong, Im just assuming here.

FYI... that whole thing that recently came out about the bumpers in general, still warned about breathable bumpers and that those still can in fact impact air flow to baby-- which is the major concern with bumpers in general, not rolling into them. So, no bumpers are best. Hope that helps.

i know they will be able to breathe...but do we need bumpers at all?? i mean ....its thin mesh so not going to keep baby from bumping head so why even use breathable OR reg bumpers? tia

I said the same thing...they are thinner and baby can still bump head. I bought a set but may return them.

I just read in a baby magazine while waiting at the OB office today. No bumpers at all are now the new recommendation. Not only are they a suffocation hazard, they did state that babies or even young infants couldn't hit their head with enough force to hurt them, and the spacing of the crib slats will not cause a child to get a limb stuck in them.

I do have breathable bumpers for the crib I just picked up from someone, and I may or may not use them. Still deciding. I tend to be laid back, so we will see.

I'm not using any bumpers.

The main purpose of them is not to cushion the baby, but to prevent them from hurting themselves by sticking a leg or arm through the slats and twisting the wrong way, or not being able to get it back in, etc.

There is an article this month in parents magazine about bumpers. You don't need bumpers, not even breathable ones. They can still cause the baby to be entrapped. Nothing besides the baby should go in the crib. My dd is 17 months and sleep with her arms and legs out of the crib all the time.

if your child is paci obsessed (like mine is) we needed them. otherwise, we would have been going into his room 5-7 times a nights for pacis that either fall out of the crib or he pushes out.

we set it up so that the breathable bumper only comes up about 3 inches above the mattress - hardly impacts airflow but keeps pacis (and feet) in!

I used traditional bumpers for my older boys prior to all the changes. For my current DS, I have a bare crib. Breathable Bumpers weren't around with my older two. I did some research when deciding what use this time. I found this interesting: To address the "suffocation" issue several manufacturers have recently created "mesh" or "breathable" bumper pads. The questions is......are these safer than pillow-like bumper pads?   Parents need to know that these breathable bumpers have not been safety tested.  In fact, there is no federal mandate for safety testing of any type of bumper pads.  Most experts have the opinion that the mesh used in the "breathable" bumper pads seems to allow for air flow.  However, this is not the only safety issue.  Some of the breathable bumper pads have a larger solid border than others (a larger ratio of "nonbreathable" vs. breathable fabric) and the type/length of the ties vary from product to product.   Besides, if parents' rationale to use the bumpers is to "cushion the crib perimeter, does the mesh provide such a cushion?

Not sure if this information is still accurate. But it definitely made me decide to not use anything in the crib.

Honestly, they're not necessary at all.

Without bumpers they CAN get their limbs through the slats - DS has been doing that forever and actually seems to prefer sleeping sometimes with his feet through the slats hanging out. Or his arm/s.

When he was younger he bumped his head on the crib some times by accident. No bruises, no need to rush to the ER, honestly it was fine. And they learn very quickly.

DS didn't take to a pacifier so that was a non issue for us. But if he had, we were using the wubbanub paci which would have had a harder time accidentally falling through the slats.

Regardless, they recommend using NO bumpers for baby's safety. So we don't use them at all. With the new baby we won't be using them at all either.

Like some pp's stated we needed them so that ds didn't get his limbs stuck in between the slats & to keep his binkies in the crib. I did a trial run at one point where I took them off for about a week & we had to go into his room a TON of extra times to pick up (and then wash) his binkies and to get the panicked little guy's arms & legs out of the slats. We eventually took them off when he was maybe around 1 or so & he was off the binks & able to free himself...

We never used any bumpers. DS gets his legs / feet in the bars all the time but always get them back out.

It would be helpful to keep the pacis in the crib, but not worth the money- I just bought extra pacis so he has a bunch in his crib at all times.
