Godparents question
the hubs & I have started to talk about possible Godparents for our little (due in April). My sister is a "shoe-in" for Godmother, but we can't seem to agree on a choice for Godfather because DH feels that it should be a member of the family. I think that a close friend is ok too, but he is convinced that bc peoples' lives change & friends fall out of contact sometimes that that's not the best idea. But we are way closer with not only one, but TWO of DH's friends & we know they would both make excellent Godfathers (whomever we chose).
I think it's silly to choose someone we don't feel as strongly about/are not as close with just bc they are family.
What do you guys think? What are you guys doing? Any input/advice?

Re: Godparents question
We were in the EXACT same situation. I chose my sister and in the end DH chose his half brother. He wanted someone from his family and felt it shouldn't be a friend. I was bummed because his half brother is only 18 and isn't even religious, and I really wanted my soon to be BIL. In the end, DH got to pick Godfather and I picked Godmother.

Re: Godparents question
I think it's more important for it to be someone you have a close relationship with than for it to be a family member. Both my godparents are my parent's siblings, I haven't seen either one in close to 10 years, so even when you choose a family member you really never know what will happen. For DS we chose my best friend (who really is more like a sister, we been best friends since we were 3 years old) and DH's older brother. I'm confident that these two people will be in DS's life for many, many years to come.
Good luck with your decision!

Re: Godparents question
Dh and I have basically zero family. I have one twin sister who is the godmother to my dd and will be to this baby as well. My dh is an only child and has no choice but to choose a friend to be Godfather to our baby. His friends are very loyal to my dh. I dont think you have to pick a family member at all.

Re: Godparents question
I am much closer with some friends than family members...and from what i've seen family members aren't always around, even if their "family". I am picking my best friend since 1st grade to be godmother this time around. I know she is never going to dissappear and will make a GREAT godmother..i hate to say it, but she will probably be a better godmother than my SIL who i choose for DS.
