Waste:
- Bedding set (you should not use bumpers or a quilt in baby's crib. All you need is fitted crib sheets and maybe a crib skirt for the bottom)
- Diaper genie/champ (for us it was a waste because we threw out every dirty diaper right after changing)
Must haves:
- Aden & Anais blankets (IMO the best blankets for babies. And so versatile)
- Swing that plugs in (otherwise you will be wasting crazy $$$$ on batteries)
- Bouncer
- Rock N Play Sleeper
- Playtex Drop In bottles (SOOOOOO much less to wash which is great when you have a newborn, plus very little gas for baby = happier baby)
- City Mini stroller (for us it has been the only stroller we've needed and DS is going to be 2 in a few months)
- Snap N Go or carseat adaptor for your stroller
- Wipes warmer (those wipes DO get cold and remember that just being nakey for babies makes them feel super cold and makes them cry. Add in a wet/cool wipe and they scream!).

From my experience, must haves with DS were:
swing that plugs into outlet (FP Little Lamb)
pack n play (we used it as a bassinet)
green scented bags for dirty diapers
Tiny Love mobile
boppy
swaddling blankets (Aden+Anais)
Breast pump (Medela Freestyle)
Bouncy Chair (FP Rainforest)
Tummy Time mat
Snap-n-Go...LOVED it!
PJ's with zippers, not buttons. So much easier for those middle of the night diaper changes!
Waste:
Bottle sterilizer (not necessary if you have a dishwasher)
Bottle warmer (just put bottles in a cup of hot water for a few minutes)
Diaper pail. I know a lot of people swear by them but the thought of having all those old dirty diapers in my house just skeeves me out.
Bedding set
Wipes warmer (read they were a fire hazard)
Travel system stroller. The stroller is so heavy compared to the Snap N Go. I preferred using the Snap N Go and then bought a lightweight umbrella stroller when DS outgrew the infant seat.

my ds is 5 months and this is what I think:
Sleep sacks are a must so get a few. I ordered the bigger size so they would last longer and they are just a little long on my ds, no biggie.
At least 2 plastic bibs for when they start to eat solids (in case one is still drying off and they need to eat again)
Disposasble changing pads to avoid nasty public changing tables
I have a large frog washcloth which goes on ds during bathtime. Keeps him warm and prevents him peeing in the air!
Utensil travel case soyou have a place to put dirty spoons if you are out and about.

Must haves:
Snap & Go
Boppy
Video Monitor (didnt realize how awesome until I got one!)
Waste of money:
Full size stroller (bulky, heavy! you only need midsize or lightweight after the snap & go, unless youre a jogger)
Wipes Warmer
Diaper Genie

Thanks looks like im changing my swing,lol.
Just an FYI we had this swing with DS. He was in it until about 5 months and used it all the time.I think we changed the batteries a total of 4 times. It lasted a while.

must haves:

rock n play
snug a bunny swing
bottle warmer
diaper genie
fleece footie pajamas
flannel receiving blankets
snap-side undershirts w/ mittens
mittens
car seat cover (shower cap style)
rectal thermometer (i like the vicks digital one)
snap n go
waterproof "lap" or "bassinet" pads -i put these over the changing pad cover -saves me from having to wash the pad cover if she pees (which happened A LOT the first few weeks)
don't need/use:
wipes warmer
swaddle blankets of any kind - i've never used my aden and anais blankets if anyone wants them, lol
DONT REGISTER FOR A BUNCH OF BLANKETS! people give you blankets like they're going out of style!
one thing I cannot emphasize enough is you can never have too many bibs/burp cloths!!

lol i dont use any of those items. one of my friends who is preg with her 4th swears by a wipe warmer but so far at 7m we havent used one. we warm bottles in warm water just like the NICU did. we use sterilizer bags for the microwave and throw diapers in scented diaper bags that go in our kitchen garbage which goes out every day.
i also had a bassinet that she never really loved. and i returned the snap-n-go cause the city mini with the car seat attachment was very light and easy to use.
we havent used our pack n play that much but i still like it and would get one. now that she can sit up its a great place to put her where she wont fall over into hard furniture. its also essential if you have a backyard in the summertime!
what i did always use were:
-swing that plugs in (we also have the graco swing frame that attaches to the car seat for travelling, which is great but not 100% necessary)
-bouncer
-rock n play sleeper (A MUST if baby isnt going in the crib first)
-gym mat/floor mat/tummy time mat
-dr. browns bottles
-a dishwasher cage for the bottle parts
-microwave sterilizing bags
-we used the city mini and the car seat attachment bar is key (we returned our snap n go)
-multiple car seat bases if you have more than one car and parents/ILs that will take the baby often
-footie PJs/sleep-n-plays
-tons of burp clothes
thats all i can think about right now..

I was just talking about this with my sister, she has the Little Lamb swing and said she has changed the batteries like 3 or 4 times since October.
The My Little Snug a Bunny is the one that plugs in.

everyones opinions will differ but here are my must haves, or didn't think was necessary:
must haves:
snap n go
swing
bouncer
play mat
diaper genie
medela breast pump
not necessary:
wipes warmer - besides harboring germs, i would rather my DC get used to wipes the way they are at room temp, especially when we weren't home.
expensive diaper bag- you're going to want to wash it, that i can promise you.
bottle sterilizer- just boil some water!
mobile to match the bedding - waste!
travel system- huge & heavy!
tips:
*i changed the batteries in my swing TWICE in 7months. and my DD was in the swing often. you will not be spending a ridiculous amount of batteries. glad i didn't get one that plugs in too because the way my house is set up i would have to move furniture to have the swing plugged in (which I am not doing) or have my DD trip over an extension cord.
*you also do not need a million bibs or burpclothes ahead of time. if your DC turns out to be a spitter, then by all means. but i have so many that were never used. waste of $.
*i also wish i didn't wash all my clothes and such ahead of time. i ended up with so many items that could have been returned but since i jumped the gun and washed everything i couldn't.

I could not agree more with these suggestions!! 
We did EVERY. SINGLE. ONE of these with DS and am kicking myself in the arse for wasting that money!

IMO biggest waste: Bedding set-I never used the bumper or quilt. Just the sheet. Diaper Gene-it grosses me out the thought of dirty diapers sitting in her room all day.

I returned $100 worth of blankets before DS was born and have a ton he didn't even use. The ones he LOVES weren't even on my registry - someone just bought him one and I had to go out and buy a couple of spares since he loves them so much!

Bibs (I love the Babies R Us ones) - Ds wasn't a spitter but, he was a drooler/dribbler so they came in handy
Jumperoo (DS was a jumping fool - he actually broke his)

Boppy Pillow with extra cover (DS loved to just chill in the Boppy)

FP Healthy Care Booster Seat (for when they are a little older)

Pack N Play
Rectal thermometer (trying to put that ear one in a little ear is impossible - and the rectal provides a more accurate reading)

Swing, but I suggest getting a swing that goes front to back and side to side. DS never liked the front to back motion. But would sleep for hours moving side to side
Bouncer seat
Diaper Dekor plus pail ( I love my diaper pail, not gross at all. At least this one isn't)
Changing table or changing dresser
Baby bath
A good diaper bag with lots of compartments
Cloth diapers to use instead of burp cloths. They absorb so much better.
Snap and Go! Loved it!!!
Waste:
Bedding set (Unless you want it just for looks)
Wipe Warmer (Sorry I don't see the need for one) You can't bring it everywhere, so what do you do when you are out and the baby is used to a warm wipe.
Bottle warmer
Can't think of anything else right now.

Everyone and every baby is different, but for us these are our must haves:
-Rock n Play- LIFESAVER!
-Blankets to swaddle her in. We liked the Carter ones and Aden and Anais
-Halo Sleep Sack-Fleece for winter(this helped her sleep 8 hours during the night)
-Fisher Price Rain Forest Play Mat- she loves it
-Bouncy Seat
-Multi-Use Pads
-Gerber cloth diapers (use as burp cloths) she spits up constantly so these are great to have around the house
- Snap n Go
-A million bibs!
Don't really need:
-breathable bumpers
-those velcro swaddlers (never used them
-bottle warmer
-wipe warmer
-diaper pail (we have it and never used it once)

Video Monitor (esp. if you have a 2 story house)
Pack n play (esp. if you have a 2 story house)
Onesies/outfits with zipper fronts (I can't tell you how much easier it was to zip up DD at 3am then having to deal with buttons, snaps, etc. esp. when you're half asleep!).

My Must-haves-
Disposable scented bags for dirty diapers. I would hang one from her drawer knob under the changing pad and one bag lasted all day. One box of these lasted me for about 8 months!
Newborn to toddler rocker- DD loved hers and still uses it occasionally.
Video monitor- I had it hooked up to her bassinet when she was sleeping right next to me. I loved being able to SEE her whenever I wanted.
Tiny Love Mobile- DD LOOOVED this.
Crib bedding- I used the sheet and bumper in her crib and used the comforter for tummy time. I was just thinking I should pull it out and let her use it as a comforter now...
Waste:
Bottle warmer (I use the microwave. GASP!)
Wipes warmer and diaper pail- Both very unnecessary, at least to me.

I agree with this 100%. Every outlet in our house is spoken for and I actually went looking for a swing that did not have to be plugged in. My son is in it all the time and I have yet to change the batteries (he has been home since Oct 29th) but I am also conscious of making turning it off once he falls into a deep sleep.
Even better than zip pajamas are night gowns. Life is so easy, but now my son's little feet are starting to stick out the bottom, so we got some wearable blankets to put on over the nightgowns.
The snap n go was a waste for me. I don't really like it. I got the Britax B-Agile and just got a car seat adaptor for it. Works great. But we also don't really go anywhere that we need to use it that much.
I would also skip the 2nd base for an infant car seat. Ours is sitting in the box in hubby's trunk. I should have stuck with my initial instinct and gotten a convertible carseat for his car.

-carters keep me dry bassinet pads and crib pads (put these on top of the sheet so when there were a million pee accidents, we just had to take this off and not everything)

-I 2nd zipper pajamas!!!!!
-diaper genie (mine never smelled and with a 2 story house it was a must for us)
