"The Last Minutes" List
im a planner. i can't help it. being a first time momma, im trying to cover all the bases that i can now, so i wont have to do (as many) last minute runs out to cvs or babies r us when the munchkin comes.... so i picked a friends brain this week and this is what she answered when i asked her "what were the unexpected last minute things you had to do/buy when the baby came?" she said: lots of big pads (oiy) alcohol swabs for the babys umbilical cord more of the newborn pacifiers (her dog kept grabbing them and the other ones aren't quite right for infants) nursing pads granny panties print out insurance paperwork to add baby and fax from the hospital treats for nurses station
thought this might help. any body have any others to add on??
happy holidays!!!

Re: "The Last Minutes" List
The things I knew I needed for my second baby were Tucks pads, stool softener, cabbage leaves, and tight sports bras... My first baby the recovery was rough. With this second one, I was much more prepared and it helped! I think these things I mentioned saved me!

Re: "The Last Minutes" List
stool softener--had to send DH out to get it, and he was embarrassed!
you don't really need alcohol swabs--we did it with alcohol on a cotton ball.
they gave me tucks pads at the hospital, and i used the always ultra thin long pads w/ wings.
treats for nurses are nice, but totally not expected (i never saw any when i was in with DS 1).
i'd hold off on buying pacifiers--you don't know what kind the baby will like. my DS hated the hospital ones, so we wound up using NUK.

May I ask.. What do you mean by cabbage leaves? And what are they used for?

Re: "The Last Minutes" List
I remember having to buy a few things after I cam home from the hospital with my first son. I would add: -witch hazel pads- they served a dual purpose: they helped relieve the pain from the episiotomy and tearing I had and also helped with hemmorhoids. Every time I changed my pad, I would line it with witch hazel pads front to back -if you are having a boy and plan to have him circumcised, you will need lots of vaseline. I sent my husband out to buy a tub of it after we got home. We got some from the hospital, but it wasn't enough. -also for circumcision care, plain gauze pads -for newborns, it is recommended not to use wipes in the very beginning, although this just depends on your comfort level with it. For me, I have 2 boys and was not comfortable using wipes until their circumcision wounds were healed. In the hospital, they give you dry wipes to use. We took some home, but needed a bunch more. I found these at BBB and they worked great.
And just as a heads up- most pediatricians don't want you using alcohol on the umbilical cord anymore. It was standard practice years ago, but most now will tell you to leave it alone until it falls off on its own, and if it doesn't fall off within 2 weeks or so, some will tell you to use alcohol then. Of course, it doesn't hurt to have alcohol swabs in the house anyway, since they have a lot of uses!

Cabbage leaves help relive pain of breast engorgement if you stick them in your bra. This is helpful if you do not plan to breastfeed, because you will be in a lot of pain when your milk comes in.

I had no idea how horrible it would be for me when the milk came in... The second time around I knew to get tight sports bras and to use cabbage leaves in them... I had the best recovery the second time around because of this!

Re: "The Last Minutes" List
Def Vaseline for the circumcision (if that's what you are doing) we also had a supply of qtips next to the changing table to apply it because it just didn't feel right using my hands to apply it because of germs and stuff, no matter how clean my hands were...it's an open wound, just wanted to be really clean
If you are breastfeeding... def get some lanolin cream...the hospital gave me a ton of free samples
Jumbo pads- I bled for 6 weeks, it really sucked
Our ped and the hospital said no alcohol on the umbilical cord. They both said just leave it alone and leave it dry and it will fall off when ready

Re: "The Last Minutes" List
I needed the following: FOR ME: Prep H (esp if you have a vag delivery) Witch Hazel (for your va-j - huge relief) Large OVERNIGHT Always worked great as they didn't stick Lots of soft food - helps ease the first poop if you have a vaginal delivery and even more so for an episiotomy. Stool Softener (same reason as soft food) LOTS OF WATER (if you're nursing especially) Breast pads & nipple cream (again if your nursing) Moisturizer for your hands and face and belly. I was SOOOO dry and itchy after delivery.
BEFORE THE HOSPITAL: Call and let them know what your delivery plans are and how many you're having...
BRING TO HOSPITAL: Phone numbers for Insurance Phone numbers for Pediatrician
FOR BABY: Lots of onesies Lots of diapers TONS of wipes a few pacifiers (depends on if you're nursing and if you're LO takes to it) Petroleum (or something similar) if you're having circumcised
Ask your PED or OB first about the alcohol pads... we were told not to use them as it was better for the umbilical cord to dry out on its own rather than force it.
I'll edit as I think of more.

Just make sure you crack the spine of the leaf... it's the liquids that help with the engorgement.
