I'm Pregnant- Now What??

So this morning I POAS and I believe I am pregnant (for the first time). I have been feeling a bit sick for the past week now. OBVIOUSLY, I will be going to the doctor to confirm this and also get any of the medical testing/information/etc. done that I need. But BESIDES going to the doctor... what did you do when you first found out you were pregnant? I don't know what to do first! Do I just browse the web? Do I take out pregnancy books from the library? Do I research what items I will need to buy and start planning a registry/wish list? Do I exercise? I have NO IDEA what I should be doing. I have been so scattered today since I saw two lines and I have to admit I'm panicking a bit. Please share what you did the first few weeks and/or what you suggest I should do!

Re: I'm Pregnant- Now What??

go out and celebrate!!!!!!

I did a little research on the web just to get an idea of what foods to eat/avoid. Just have some questions prepared for your doctor's appt.

Re: I'm Pregnant- Now What??

i agree --- call your doctor and make an appointment to confirm the pregnancy. That is the first step. My doc's office didn't want to see me until I was 7-10 days past my period's due date despite the fact that I POAS 3 times and all 3 were positives!

Once you see your doctor----he or she will prescribe prenatal vitamins for you to take. You can ask or read up about what foods to avoid.

Continue exercising. I always read that you can continue doing 80% of what you were doing before!

Good luck to you!

Congrats!!

i had fun browsing the internet and signing up for various sites like babycenter, etc--where you can track your progress. I did a little research about foods to avoid. if you're not taking a prenatal vitamin, I'd get an OTC one and take that. As for exercise, you can do whatever you were already doing for the most part. I think you are supposed to avoid ab exercises.

Enjoy! have a glass of sparkling cider and celebrate!

Re: I'm Pregnant- Now What??

Congrats!!! Obviously the first step is making an appointment with your OB. Depending on how far along you are, you may have to wait a while before being seen (I got my BFP at 5 weeks and my OB wouldn't see me to confirm until 8 weeks Chat Icon ). During that time period I signed up for the updates on Babycenter which I loved because they'd email you weekly pregnancy progression updates that I found extremely helpful.

Your OB will give you a prescription for prenatal vitamins but if you want you could go ahead and buy some OTC prenatals to start taking in the meantime.

In terms of exercising, you can continue with the level of activity you are used to, just don't overdo it.

The books I really liked were Great Expectations and Your Pregnancy, both of which broke down your pregnancy week by week.

Hope you have a happy and healthy 9 months!

ETA: Although you have a lot of time before you need to start worrying about registering, I just wanted to recommend the book Baby Bargains. Found it to be very useful when researching what I needed for the baby.

Re: I'm Pregnant- Now What??

Congrats and welcome to the pregnancy board. I would just enjoy the time right now. I got my BFP when I was 5 wks and my dr didnt see me until I was 9 or 10 wks. If you exercised before you can still continue, at least that is what my dr. told me and all the books say. Don't do any core/ab workouts but still keep up with your routine. Drink plenty of water and start with prenatals if you haven't already. Do some research on what you should and shouldn't eat/drink. I would hold off on a registry, I am 20 wks and I haven't done mine yet. Have fun and enjoy this time!

Re: I'm Pregnant- Now What??

congrats!!!

1st thing I did was check all the medications I was taking and vitamins to see if they were safe for pregnancy. I called my dr and we went over which were safe and which had to go.

start a prenatal (if you haven't been taking one already).

research foods/drinks to avoid during pregnancy and implement into your diet.

ENJOY IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Congrats!

As everyone said you will want to make an appt with an OB. Many won't see you until you are further along (for example, my doc likes the first appt to be b/t 8-10 weeks). But you can take a blood test in the interim to confirm the pregnancy.

Definitely check out websites (I like babycenter.com) to determine what you can and cannot eat and what to do to help with indigestion and nausea.

The first few weeks are pretty surreal.... But what an exciting time!
