Is this a typical policy for stores to have regarding price adjustments?
I went to ny and co and wanted to return 4 pairs of jeans and rebuy them plus a few other items to total at least 150 so I could use my 70.00 off a purchase of 150.00 or more. The cashier tells me you can return them but then have to go search for the same pants on the shelves bc they cant sell me the exact pair I just returned. So I did that and then said but you are out of them. She said well thats the policy, sorry. So I asked for a manager who explained it is their policy, but she went to look for the pants in the stock room. She found 3 of the 4 pairs I wanted so she let me go against store policy on one pair and rebought the same exact pair that I had just returned. Can someone tell me I am not alone for thinking this is a crazy policy. Or can someone in retail explain it to me.

I do think that is so dumb, but I know that this is the policy at the Gap as well, so I guess it's pretty common.

I think this is a common policy at many stores. Most store coupons exclude exactly what you did because otherwise people would just come in on a non sale day and scoop everything up and then come back and bring the coupon for a price adjustment. In order to get the coupons you need to play by their rules. They could easily just not offer coupons any more.

When I worked at Sears we just had a button on the screen that was for price adjustments. The customers were allowed to keep the same items they had originally purchased. I'm not sure if the policy is still the same there anymore.

Not retail but I did this very thing at
toys r us..lol.. just brought my recpt in and got $ back..
sorry if this is hijacking but I do think that
what happened to you is absurd. Its clear you had a plan and they just screwed with you.

That is stupid. I have walked into Kohls and gotten price adjustments a few times. Too bad more stores don't make it that easy.

I am a manager at a clothing store. I doubt that it's a "official" policy. I just let people do it if they want. Id rather have a portion of the money from that sale back than lose the entire sale. Plus it's just not worth the argument...

Gap actually does price adjustments within 14 days of pruchase with just your receipt/

I think this is different than a typical price adjustment. I *think* the OP made a purchase, got a coupon that was valid at a later date. Then tried to return and repurchase the items, essentially using the coupon to benefit her prior purchase which was made when the coupon was not valid.(correct me if I am wrong) if I am understanding that right, most stores won't let you do that. The coupons usually state "not valid on prior purchases"

Gap does do a 14 day price adjustment , however if items are returned there was (when I worked there almost 8 years ago) a specific time period we were supposed to wait until we put the returned items back on the sales floor. The only time we ever really followed this is if we knew someone was put to scam big.

I kind of think its a cheesy thing to do, return them and then rebuy them using a coupon...I'd have just returned them an rebought them later in the day or sometime else.

with this mindset you're spiting yourself and the store.
if you return you run the risk of not being able to purchase that item again.
if the store makes you return it, they're running a big risk of losing the sale than if they'd have just adjusted the price.
in this economy, a bird in the hand is better than two in a bush.
to the OP, i've heard of this before, i have no idea why stores do it...

This. If we could do this for everything where would it end? Its a slippery slope for retailers and purchasers alike. I work for a retailer and we make sure to put "not valid on prior purchases" wording on all coupons and discounts.

ok to clarify... I bought jeans at 50% off on Black Friday, plus I had a coupon code. So the 4 pairs came to 99.00. I then returned them and bought them at the current price whch was actually more money per jean bc the current sale is buy one get one 75% off. So each pair was roughly 32.00 each. I then bought some more items to get my total to at least $150( actually came to 169) and used a 70.00 coupon to bring my total to 99.00. So in the end I got 4 jeans, 2 bracelets , a necklace and earings for the same 99.00. Tacky?? Hey, everyone is entitled to their opinion.. I call it smart shopping.

they told me they wont restock them until after the store closes.
