how long do you have after your water breaks, before they talk cs?
Just curious, my bff's water broke and its a slow going process, wondering how long they'll let her labor before they start talking c-section...thanks!!

Every case is different, depending on how the baby is reacting to contractions, etc. But, you have to deliver within 24 hours of your water breaking or else the baby is at risk for infection.

what she said. i had a csection after 19hours of labor, cervadil, pitocin and never dilating past 6cms.

My water broke on its own and after 22 hours and not dilating past 3 cm even with piotcin, my Dr. came in with two options a)wait it out for another 12 hrs and see if goes anywhere or, b) c-sectin. I didn't even have to think twice and choose a c-section I was exhausted from having contractions every 2 mins apart for over 20 hours. DD was born 20 mins after I said lets do a c-sec.

My water broke before I was dilated, contracting, and had anything else going on labor wise.
I asked about the 24 hour rule, and although they say they generally follow that guideline it is not as strict as it sounds. They monitor Mom and baby and go from there to see how everyone is reacting to everything. Some labor longer than 24 hours, others don't make it to 24 hours.

Usually they want you to deliver within 24 hours after your water breaks to avoid infection but it really also depends on how well you are progressing for example if your water breaks at 8am and its now 8pm and you are still 3cm dilated the doctor may mention csection since you haven't progressed in 12 hours.
