NPR: Teacher question...

So I randomly had an unannounced observation from the Assistant Superintendent today, who noramlly does all of the tenure observations for 3rd year teachers...

now here's the odd part...I'm a 2nd year teacher!!

My colleagues (union reps) said they don't know of an occasion where that has happened before, and find it curious...thinking maybe he was mistaken thinking I'm 3rd year and came in early due to the pregnancy leave I'll be taking...

but really? a super making that kind of mistake is hard for me to wrap my head around...

have any of you heard of this happening with a teacher at your school, a suit coming in during 2nd year when they're not even up for tenure yet??

I'm trying not to look into it too much, but I CAN"T HELP IT!!!

I can't help but wonder if it's a BAD thing...although one teacher said "district office supers would NOT waste their time doing an observation on a 2nd year teacher unless it was for good reason"

Not sure about that one. In my district we were observed by an asst. supt. during our second year and the supt during our tenure year. I'm not sure that they still do that though. Did you ask your building admin. if they got any feedback?

Is your school known for doing shady things?

I think it could be rather innocent. Maybe they are trying something new. Did anyone else get observed?

I would talk to your union rep but don't make it into a big deal until you know you should. If you get a great review then you have something good to put in your file/portfolio when it comes time for tenure review.

Don't let this stress you too much.... I know I would be thinking the same as you but I am sure its much better then what you are thinking

well i mean sometimes there have been weird things, but it's only my 2nd year I haven't seen much...and i have all good observations so far, etc

but no, nobody else got observed...one of my coworkers that im friends with was practically crapping his pants today (he's tenure year) thinking he was getting observed when he walked by my room and saw the guy in there

im not like stressing where im upset or anxious but its just definitely on my mind and something im curious about...

and no my husband also said "don't talk about it too much anymore, if anything, just to the union rep you spoke with today...you don't want a rumor mill starting, or other teachers putting in their two cents and talking about it" and i definitely agree with him on that

Our asst. supt observes once a year for all 3 years. All are announced though. She only popped in on me once when I first started. All of our unannounced observations are by the principal.
I wouldn't worry. Will you have a post-observation for some feedback?
