Salad Bars from Delis?
I work in NY and there are salad bars all over the place where you pick your salad and then add the toppings and mix it all up with dressing of your choice... I've been avoiding them because I noticed that they use the same tongs to pick up the protein (diced ham, turkey, etc). But do you think I'm being overly cautious?
I can't help but think all the veggies are contaminated from the tongs going from the cold cuts etc...thoughts?! I kinda want it for lunch

When I was working in the city I can not tell you how SICK I got from food poisioning from eating at a salad bar. I was so sick I had to make my parents drive in and take me home bc there was no way I could make it back to LI on the subway & train. It was SO awful. I couldn't even imagine what would happen if I were preggo!
So from my experience, I'd stay far, far away. I just don't trust.
And though I think the deli is no longer there... stay away from the Liberty Deli on 49th and Madison!!!!!!!!!!!
ETA- OK I ate from one of those open salad buffet bars... the ones that have the hot and cold foods. That is what I do not trust!
If it's a Salad Works or Devon & Blakely that exclusively does salads... then I would be more inclined to eat there. Since I feel like they are more on top of their foods there.

I eat from them as well and haven't had issues (I did moreso during my first pregnancy though).
I'm not a fan of the salad bars that PP stated though - not sure about the cleanliness and turnover of food.

I would personally not be cautious to just ask them to use a clean pair of tongs. Tell them that you have a food allergy and with your pregnancy you don't want to take any chances!
You can make up the part about the food allergy....

thanks ladies, I went and got one and it's delicious...I figure I should get some veggies in when I want it...I don't think I had a salad the whole first trimester

I stopped eating from salad bars anywhere after I saw a man pick up through the tray of hard boiled eggs with his bare hand. It was in a very clean place, too. It made me think if this happens, whats to stop it from happening anywhere else? Ewwwww
