Feeling guilty about not having told family

I just found out I was pregnant last week. I wasn't planning on telling anyone for a while. I found out last night that my grandfather suddenly passed away. I then decided to tell my immediate family about the pregnancy. I feel so horrible that I wasn't able to share the news with my grandfather. He would have been thrilled. I just saw him a week ago and never thought it would be the last time I'd see him. I'm having a really hard time with this.

I hope at least that because I'm so early, it won't have any major effect on my pregnancy. I'm having trouble sleeping. I feel sick to my stomach over this. The next few days are going to be really hard. I know that when DS sees my grandmother, he's going to ask about my grandfather. I have no idea how to explain something like this to a 3 year old. I'm not sure what I'm looking for, but I just needed to get this out.

I don't know what your beliefs are, but I think he does know and is thrilled! And I'm sure he's watching over you.

Re: Feeling guilty about not having told family

My heart goes out to you and I think I completely understand what you are going through.

My Dad had been fighting cancer for 3 years and about a month ago we lost him. It went very fast and faster then we thought it was going to. And one thing that really bothered me in the beginning after he passed, like shook me to the core, was that my Dad was not going to meet or see the Grandchild that I am pregnant with.

Someone said something to me that really meant a lot. My Dad has met the baby. From now until March, they are spending time together in heaven. He is playing with the baby, knows if it is a boy or a girl even when we do not, and already knows what its name is and what it will be like.

That comforted me because I so much wanted my Dad to have time with this baby.

Please let me know if I can do anything at all.

Everyone kept saying to me ... make sure you are taking care of yourself and the baby, and in a way I had no idea what that meant. I think it meant to make sure I eat my meals and sleep/rest when I could. Do your best.

I am so sorry for your loss!

I agree that you may not have told your grandfather yourself, but he does know! You have to forgive yourself for this because you did nothing wrong, and do it for your baby. He/she feels everything you feel. Know that your grandfather is thrilled for you as, I'm sure, is everyone else. Grieving is so difficult, take the time you need, but please don't stop taking care of yourself in the meantime.
