Changing Table Question
How do you girls feel about a changing table with low bars around opposed to a dresser/changer combo.
I originally ordered the combo figuring it would be more space saving and effective, but then I read an article about the individual changers being much safer because of the bars, which makes sense.
Now I'm not sure. What do you girls think?
Here's the changer i wanted...
Now Im thinking of getting something like this

I have the first pic. I am not worried about it not being safe at all.
You will read somewhere that just about everything is unsafe. Part of it is your supervision of the situation.

i keep feeling like the pad on the dresser will move around alot when the baby is moving.
Anyone have experience with this?

We had a dresser/changing table combo, it didn't have low bars going around it. We screwed the back of the changing table pad onto the back of the dresser...it has a tab and comes with a screw for that purpose.
To be honest you are right at the baby's side. You make sure you get everything ready before the baby goes up on the changing table, so that you don't have to step away for a moment.
My daughter did flip off of the changing table once. DH was changing her and had her legs up in the air, and she literally did a backflip off of the changing table. Honestly I think that with the momentum she must have had to flip off, 2 or 3 inch low bars wouldn't have made a difference. And amazingly enough she was fine. I think I was more traumatized then she was.
For practicality and long-term use, I think the combo style changing tables are better. We still use my daughter's as her dresser and she is 6 years old now.

OMG thank God she was ok. I know in my head that I wont be leaving the baby's side. Thanks for telling me about the fact that the changing pad screws in tho. That makes me feel better. It definitely saves a lot of space for me to go with the combo rather than the table and dresser.

You will see once you are on the parenting side...babies end up falling off of things often  In no way am I saying that you should be less then careful, but...it will most likely happen once or twice in the baby's lifetime...it's sort of a rite of passage. I remember feeling so bad and coming down so hard on DH when it happened to my daughter --- and it just sucked for him that it happened while HE was changing her and not me! But then you read every few months on the pareting board of it happening. They fall off of changing tables, couches, etc. And 99% of the time the baby is absolutely fine.
So...of course, you are super careful...but...I kinda feel like if the baby is going to take a flying leap, they are gonna do it reguardless of some low bars!

i have one similar to the first pic. it came with a wood piece that went on top to hold in the changing pad. its sort of like this one:
it came with the furniture from BBB. the dresser can later be turned into a hutch.

My changing table looks just like the first one you posted. I have a changing pad on top and never had a problem. I still change DS on it and he is 2.5. I never walk away from him. I keep all his diapers,wipes in a basket on top. Alot of his clothes are in the draws and I just keep one hand on him and the other to open draw. If I need clothes for the day from his tall dresser, i would always get it out and place in next to him before I changed him.

I have low bars and THANK GOD I do. My dd is a little wild child. As soon as she could roll she was trying to get off the changing table. I have a separate dresser and a changing table. I love my changing table, I store all my diapers/wipes/creams/sheets/ and bibs in baskets underneath. Its so easy to just reach down and grab everything.

I can only speak from my experience. I have a regular changing table, have used it for 2 kids.
I love it! I love that it has space for all my needs when changing them without taking up all my drawer space.

I have something similar to the first pic. A dresser with a changing pad on top.
IMHO.....they're both the same. With both you CANNOT leave baby unattended. They can role over in an instant. I think the second gives you a false sense of security.
If you really like pic 1. Go with that. No need for the changing table.
ETA DS is almost impossible to change. Has been for a while. I can't imagine those little bars would really help much.

DS is 16 months. He actually rips the pad cover off. But the pad stays put, for the most part. When they are really little, it really doesn't move at all.
At this age, I'm changing him on the floor a lot anyway. It's an EVENT.

We have kind of a combo of the 2, best of both worlds I think. It's the DaVinci Emily changing table. It has 3 big dresser drawers underneath, with the safety bars around the top. I have never felt the ones without bars were all that safe- babies can just be so unpredictable. We are tight on space, though, so a combo was kind of a must for us. Here's the one we have:

I have something like #1 at home. My mother has #2 at her house so I have experience with both. They both serve their purpose. The only thing I didn't like about #2 is that it only had room for the changing pad on there. There was no spot for the wipes/ointment/etc. I like to have everything right at my fingetips just in case.... But other than that, like I said they serve their purpose. And once baby really starts moving and rolling over, those bars aren't going to do much.
