Are you going to Lamaze?

Did anyone go to or sign up for Lamaze? I am trying to see is it worth going?

I went back and forth on this a lot and ultimatly decided not to do it. I didnt want to invest a) the full day at the course or b) the 200 bucks for it.
... especially bc I had heard such mixed reviews on whether it was helpful

I figured I would compromise and so I got a video and hope to watch it with DH this weekend.

ETA: We did take a tour of the hospital which was a tour/information session in one which i found useful - it was 2 hrs and free of charge. We are also signed up to take a newborn CPR class next week at the hospital I'll be delivering at . NSUH.

my hospital offers a full day prenatal/birthing class at the hospital...

it involves everything from the hospital tour, to birthing/breathing techniques, to breastfeeding info...

so we are doing that and I think that should be sufficient

We are going to do it. A few people said they took it and it was helpful. I know a lot of people say it doesn't really help, but it's our first baby and we have the time (and money) so we are going to try to get as prepared as possible.

But a lot of people said they didn't do it and didn't regret it. So if you decide against it I'm sure you'll be fine too.

Thanks for the information and responces. I have thought of a video for a tool instead. I think I rather do the child cpr class-

I am schedule for a class through my hospital but it is not just breathing. It is a tour and just childbirth in general.

When I was pregnant with my son, I took Childbirth Ed at New Baby Belly. I HIGHLY recommend it! It was so informative, fun, and really helped prepare us for what was to come.

Thanks I just looked at the class schedule for New Baby Belly. that might be something we are interested in.

I also found out the classes offered for mom's delivering at Stony brook are booked for December but available in January.

The classes are the 3 first Thursdays of the month from 11a - noon. Which really just doesn't work for DH and I.

I know we are still going to do the hospital tour. I also saw something on there called "Meet the Midwives" which is on the first Thursday of the month at 7p. That would most likely work.

Nope! I feel like my body will do what it wants anyway, all those breathing and techniques will be forgotten.

DH and I went back and forth a lot on this and ultimately decided we rather spend the $$ on our baby... we keep on saying we will watch a DVD, but i am due in 16 days and no DVD here

Just a FYI, you can rent the laugh and learn videos from the library for free. If you don't think it gives you enough info you could always decide to take a class after. DH and I rented the videos and that was good enough for us and we were able to watch them at our own pace.

I am a labor and delivery nurse and I also teach lamaze classs. From experience of having three children and helping women give birth for the last 12 years, I can say without doubt-Well worth it! It truly makes a huge difference on your birthing experience! There is nothing more important than being prepared for the birth of your baby! We went when pregnant with DS... it was through LIJ... it was horrible. A waste of time and money. You really need to look into who is giving the classes, what they are covering, etc. Our instructor talked to everyone as if they have never sat in any health class before. She spent more time on the birthing process (which everyone agreed it could have been 1hr and done) and 1hr/day on the breathing - it was a three day course over the span of 3 weeks. I got more out of the books I read than out of the instructor. The nurse at my OB's office offers a course and she focuses on relaxation/breathing and goes over the labor and delivery... I think, if we decide to go for a "refresher", we are going to Maryann.

Do your research. You'll find something that works for you.

we are going to an all day session in December through SOBGYN. They do a hospital tour also. I cant wait!

Nope i never took one. Ended up with a c section anyway My bf took a class and when she gave birth she told me everything she had learned went right out the window.

I can't imagine not taking course! I'm taking Bradley... 12 weeks, 3 hour sessions each time. I can't imagine just doing 1 or 2 classes. Different strokes for different folks but if you can afford it, do it. I would not recommend taking through a hospital but rather an independent provider. The hospital only teaches you to be a good patient versus an informed consumer aware of her options.
