spinoff to moms over 35 post

In reading the responses, it seems that most of you, and you doctors, rely on the 12 week ultrascreen and 20 week sono. My doctor relys on those also, but also uses the 16 week AFP bloodtest as a screening also. He uses all 3 to come up with the statistics of abnormalities. My last pregnancy the ultracreen and sono came back great, but my AFP test was a little off, which sent me into a full blown panic. Everything turned out fine and I have since learned the AFP has many false positives. So my question is, does your doctor do the AFP also and combine those results with the other two tests? This time before the AFP, I am going to speak with him and see if this is really a necessary and accurate test.

I responded to the other post. Totally forgot to add the 16 week afp test. Im so sorry. I also got a sono at 16 weeks as well. Yes, the doctor does combine all three tests to evaluate the baby. Again I apologize. My brain isnt working the way it used to

Ok, now i'm confused..i am 90% sure i get the afp (finger blood test), at my 12 week ultrascreen app't. I thought they went together.

I'm almost certain that's the way they do it at my OBGYN office.

Usually there are two sets of blood work. One done at 12 weeks and a another done at 16 weeks. I know alot of drs offices are different though. With both of my pregnancies this is how it was done. But again thats just me.

Yep. I had a finger test at 12 weeks AND 16 weeks.

Not to confuse you more, but for my last pregnancy I got a finger prick at my 12 weeks and had bw done at 16 weeks. I thought the 16w bw was the AFP-especially since that is when I got the call from my dr that it came back a little high. I remember thinking "why did it take so long for that to come back"- thinking it was the 12w bw. I will let you know more on Tuesday- I have my 12w ultrasound.

AFP is normal blood work done at 16 weeks.

I also got the 12 week and 16 week blood tests. I thought it was part of what I call the 12 week scan. She uses all three to give risk calculation.

I had the AFP test at 16 weeks too. It was not a finger prick, it was a blood draw for a vial of it! At 12 weeks, I did not get blood drawn for this pregnancy because I was going for the CVS test anyway.

anyway, my OB always used all three as gauges.
