Random question about GBS
I got the results from my GBS culture today and it was negative (yay!). With my last pregnancy, I was positive, so I just kind of assumed I would be again this time. Needless to say, I was pleasantly surprised! Afterwards though, I was thinking about it, and I'm wondering... since GBS bacteria can become dormant and active throughout pregnancy (which obviously is why they test you so late in the pregnancy), if your culture comes back negative, how can they know it won't suddenly become active over the course of the next few weeks before you deliver? Anyone have any idea?

I'm assuming that your OB is the same from your first pregnancy?? If so, then I wouldn't worry too much about it. Maybe ask the next time you go ?? I'm sorry I'm no help here. But if the doctor isn't too concerned about this then I wouldn't be either. How much longer do you have? HTH

this is actually what i worried about before having the test and when mine came back positive, my doctor actually said being positive at the time of the test is better because then you get treated at delivery no matter what, whereas if you're negative you don't know whether you're positive at the time of delivery. i would definitely mention your concerns to your doctor. the liklihood of transmission even if you're positive and aren't on antibiotics is so low that it probably won't be an issue, but it doesn't hurt to ask.

Actually, I switched practices this time so it's not the same doctor. But they know I was GBS+ last time. I'm definitely planning to ask at my appt next week. I only have about 3 weeks left!

Well, I'd much rather just know that I'm negative and not get antibiotics. While everything worked out fine last time, it was just annoying to have the antibiotics because I couldn't labor at home like I wanted to, I had to get right to the hospital. And I wasn't able to walk around the hospital when I got there because they needed to set up the IV right away. It seems to me, though, that this system of testing around 36/37 weeks has been around so long that it must work- I'm sure the docs know what they're doing  I was just more curious than anything.
