WWYD? TOT related...

I live in NJ. I am in a small town that is 1 square mile. I'm signed up for email and text alerts that get sent to residents when they need to alert us to something.

I just got a message that stated: "local trick or treating is postponed until Friday, 11/4/11"

WWYD? Would you go TOT anyway? I really don't want to have to go through the whole costume thing again with my kids. I get that there are some trees down all over the place, but by the time we go TOT later tonight, we will be fine. And with a 4 and almost 2 year old, we're not going far.

Do you think they will tell people to go home if they see you out TOTing? Ugh, I think I'm just going to take the kids later tonight when DH is done working. I'm sure not everyone will have gotten the message.

Go triick or treating. I'm sure not everyone gets those alerts anyway. It is Halloween and if it safe in your area go out and enjoy the holiday.

PS if you get a poor response when out trick or treating you can always to round 2 on Friday :)

I doubt anyone will be passing out candy since they sent out an alert about it. I'm sure it will be on the local news stations as well. What about going to the mall?

Hmmm... I'm pretty sure most people are probably prepared with candy for trick or treaters today. I know that if any kids come to my door, I will still give them candy, even though I saw the message. I can't imagine telling a child that I won't give them candy because TOTing has been postponed. But who knows, maybe some people will.

As for the mall, I'm not sure that will work. We have to wait until my DH gets home, which will be about 6:00, then the mall is about 25 miniutes away going in the direction of commuter traffic so it will probably take longer. It's a good idea, but probably would be too late for us.

That's very strange to me. You can't postpone Halloween! I would go to another town/neighborhood. Just park your car in an area where you see other kids & take them around on a block or two.

Ooh, that's great idea too! I think we will start off by going around our own neighborhood and if we find people aren't answering their doors or refusing to give us candy or if we get yelled at by the cops Chat Icon Chat Icon we will just go to the next town over! We are less than 1 mile away from different towns in every direction! So silly!

So then go TOTing. I doubt people will actually answer and say no candy. They probably just wouldn't answer at all if they were going to wait until the newly designated day.

MANY towns do not actually do TOTing ON Halloween. Many that do, have designated times. Long Island is the only place I've been where it's a free for all Chat Icon

I grew up in MD, and TOTing was always on Halloween. Now I did hear that some upstate towns are postponing TOTing this year due to power outages and safety of children. This is what I'm guessing is the circumstances in NJ too.

Just be cognizant of why they are canceling. Some counties that have had a lot of snow, still have falling branches and power lines down. It may be those dangers that are pushing back ToT.

I would also go to a different town, unless you want to wait at a lot of unopened doors or get the response... "didn't you hear that we postponed it?/ or didn't you get the text message"... something like that. If TOT is important for you to do today (As it would be for me- especially considering you were prepared and they did not notify you until last minute), I would just drive to a different neighborhood and walk around there.

Interesting--I have never heard of that from any of my relatives with kids in other states or from my college friends who have grown up in all different places. I wonder if it is a newer trend.

My 1st Halloween in Queens I was shocked to see kids going into stores on Steinway street, but apparently that is more common now, as is trick or treating in the mall.

My friend who lives in Astoria (originally from Delaware) just posted about this on FB. How strange! I lived in Queens til I was 8 and I remember just going into apartment buildings. Very convenient when it was raining/cold!

I thought this was the reason for the postpone.

OK, so here's my update. The fallen trees and streets where there are down power lines is exactly the reason that they postponed TOTing.

We ended up going to the next town over, parking on a street and TOTing there. The funny thing is there town had the exact same stuff going on. Tree branches down, streets without power...etc. But they didn't cancel trick or treating. We could have easily done the same thing in our own town. So now I might end up taking the kids out on Friday too, just on our block, so our neighbors can see the kids in their costumes. I just pray that we get a lot of people to our house because I currently have an entire huge bowl of candy that has not been touched yet.
