Re: LIRR is over the top tonight
If I wasn't so exhausted right now, I'd be FUMING
DH calls me at 6:45. He thinks he can get a train to Oyster Bay. Can I drive the 15 miles to OB to pick him up? Sure
Get the kiddos dressed in pj's, teeth brushed, grab two bedtime stories and fav stuffed animals and into the van we went.
Navigate winding, rainy, dark north shore roads. Miss my turn for OB, wind up in Mill Neck, can't turn around for 2 miles, back to OB.
Wait, wait... dark deserted lot, people hanging out in the park , me txting DH, and two sleeping kids in the back seat.
He NEVER moved... still west of Jamaica at 9 pm
My DD started to cry, I couldn't drive around anymore, cell phone battery for both of us low. Finally, at 9:15 I texted him I had to leave.
I'm home with kids and his parents are awaiting his call. They are too old for this @#$%
All of this for a $300 monthly pass
ETA: DH told me there was a rumor on the train that passengers go so fed up they left the train and were walking the tracks so the LIRR had to shut off the third rail so no one would get killed. Who even knows if this is true? Maybe their way of diffusing blame

Re: LIRR is over the top tonight
I just got back from picking up DH at Kew Gardens. Loaded 2 sleeping kids into the car and off we went. Thank God we were able to get him.
Fun times courtesy of the LIRR. All for the low low price of $225 a month.
Oh and the icing on the cake was getting stuck at a railroad crossing (for a passing train ) 5 blocks from my house.

Re: LIRR is over the top tonight
Lightning struck near Jamaica and affected the signals BIG TIME.
I know it's frustrating - and I would HATE to go through what your DH and you and your kids have gone through. I would TOTALLY be annoyed.
But, it's weather related. Sucks, but when lightning strikes or a blizzard comes, any mode of transportation is affected. Ya know?
I hope he gets home soon! And maybe he can take tomorrow off?!!?

I was SCARED! So kudos to you with your kids!!!

Re: LIRR is over the top tonight
MIL just called me.
DH said they are bringing his train to Jamaica and all passengers must depart.
Both of us feel, no way, no how should my IL's be driving around Jamaica... they don't know the area and well... do we have to discuss 2 70 year olds driving to Jamaica at 11 pm
So DH is picking up the Air Tram and heading to JFK and they will pick him up there
Don't ask I don't understand it either.
Who wants to bet he gets home just in time to take a shower and head right back in??
Oh, and he can't work from home tomorrow. IT issue between work's server and our comp. at home

Re: LIRR is over the top tonight
My husband is still sitting on a train at Jamaica. I wanted to get him hours ago but he kept saying that the train would be up and running soon.
Now I have a sick child who I cannot wake up and drag out of the house and he's stuck on a train that might never run. How come there aren't any shuttle buses..what are they doing for ppl.. This is ridiculous!

I said the same thing about the shuttle buses. They continue to have so many problems and no contingency plans. I was thinking about when I used to take the LIRR pregnant - what the heck would I be doing now.

Re: LIRR is over the top tonight
I've had it with LIRR there should be some type of revolt against them. Why don't they arrange for buses or something. My dh has been at Jamica since 6 pm and its now 11. He finally got a car service to drive him out to hicksville and I have to take the baby out in the rain to go pick him up from there.
They are the worst with providing information to their customers. Its horrible, they really should be ashamed of themselves!!

Re: LIRR is over the top tonight
My DH has been trying to get home since 4:30.
I want to know what other rail systems around the world do and if they have this many issues. We had a 10 minute thunderstorm that wasnt anything major and the whole system is out for hours maybe days. The weather channel said there were storms coming couldnt they hault service until the storm passed or dont they have back up signals..
What did they do before powered signals? If any other company acted the way the LIRR acts and treats their customers they would be out of business but instead they are getting $400 a month per rider give or take and they still cant get their stuff together...

Yeah DH said it was pretty bad...and he never complains about the LIRR. He said NO ONE told them anything until 9:40 and that was after 1 hr of being stopped.
He jumped off at Forest Hills when they gave that option since my fam lives in queens.
CRAZY.

Re: LIRR is over the top tonight
to everyone.
To answer the question about mass transit in other cities and around the world...
A childhood friend of mine has lived in several world cities on a few continents. She grew up in Syosset.
She said, hands down NY has the WORST mass transit... LIRR, subways, buses... so dirty, unreliable and flippin expensive
You would be if you saw some of the mass transit systems around the world... you would think you were traveling in first class.
Good luck to everyone

DH was supposed to take the 5:09. STILL isn't home. My wonderful brother went out to Jamaica to pick him up so I wouldn't be dragging my 2-month-old out to Queens.

DH ended up going back to his office and calling a car service, so he's finally on his way home. Glad your husband was able to get off in Forest Hills, that saved him from experiencing a little bit of this nightmare!

Re: LIRR is over the top tonight
I had to drive to Jamaica to get DH. GPS took me to the wrong place twice. Over an hour and a half later, I am there and DS is crying.
To top it off, DH clearly has bronchitis and dealt with all of that sooo sick.
I told him that even if there is no service, he's not going in. Sick day.
He was on a train from 6pm till 10:30.
People keep jumping out of the stopped trains so they had to cut the power over and over. There was no AC. The cops got on the trains and were patroling them. They were trying to stop the jumpers. *****? WHO JUMPS OUT OF A TRAIN??? He was sooo mad. Then there was a medical emergency. His phone died. They talked about sending his train back to penn but, eventually bumped up to another train stuck at the Jamaica platform and let them walk through 2 trains to get off.

Re: LIRR is over the top tonight
I know this doesnt help at all now
But if anyone wants to avoid Jamaica next time - for $5 you can take the AirTrain to Howard Beach and get picked up there (or they can get a cab across the street depending on how much you like them at the moment )
What a nightmare last night!!!

This is the part about the LIRR that infuriates me - there is no excuse for the lack of communication.
I hope everyone got home safely last night...good luck this morning.

Yeah. Well was on the train from 740-10ish. Stopped for 2 hrs. There was a sick passenger on his train and they had to let them out so they went backwards to FH and said anyone else could get off. So at least he didn't have to go all the way to the city again. But still!!

That's where my DH eventually ended up at JFK.
My FIL had to pick him up... he's old... the only place he knows are the airports from picking up my SIL 57395 times.
So he left work about 5 and got home at 12:45 am
He could have flown to Europe
Oh, the ultimate irony... the form to renew his monthly card on his credit card came today
You know what I'd like to do with that form
