Teaching Eyes, Nose, Mouth to a Toddler

When did your DC understand and could point to each?

How did you teach them?

DS is going to be 15 months next week. I've been trying to teach him eyes, nose, mouth and all the other parts and he just doesn't care.Chat Icon

I have been using his winnie the pooh to show the eyes then I point to his eyes and say Jasons eyes.

Re: Teaching Eyes, Nose, Mouth to a Toddler

DD is 17 months & knows eyes- she points to them and says "eyes" when I ask "where are your eyes" she also does this with hair, belly & feet. Sometimes Tongue, too. We haven't mastered nose, mouth or ears yet. We've been working on it for a while..she started doing it probably around 15.5-16 months.

We sing Head, shoulders, knees & toes- the whole song, which also says eyes & ears, mouth & nose..
Or lots of times I just say "such pretty eyes", and point to her eyes & my eyes. things like that.
We also use her baby doll to show her.

We did silly things to teach the boys. DH would lift up his shirt and smack his belly and say, "belly." Now if you say belly, that's what the boys do. For their feet, I would put my feet to my nose and say, "P U. My feet smell." Now the boys do that too. Silly things like that. I think they learned this around 13mo.

Ainsley is 18 months and is just starting to learn body parts. The only things she has down are eyes and hair. Sometimes if we ask where her belly is, she'll lift her shirt.

You know now that I think of it, he does know hair. I say comb your hair and he will try to. Chat Icon Ok so at least that one thing. I think I forgot because I really didn't teach him that he kinda picked it up himself since I always comb his hair.Chat Icon

I'm going to try to make it more silly and see if he takes to it.

We read a lot of books that talk about the different parts of the body. She's almost 15 months and knows head, hair, ears, eyes, nose, mouth, tongue, fingers, toes. She's only known these things for about a month though.

We would constantly point them out to DD on ourselves and on her. She just caught on eventually. I don't remember when exactly she learned but I'd say somewhere around 1 1/2.

I dont' remember when DS knew them BUT its awesome when he does and you have to use a public bathroom - you can play simon says (or just touch) and he won't touch walls/floor!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon

I just kept repeating it and pointing it out on her. She doesn't point to her eyes but will blink if i ask.

Re: Teaching Eyes, Nose, Mouth to a Toddler

I think i started with DS around that age..and i would use his big stuffed animals too and point out the eyes, ears, etc.

now at 23 months, he knows the parts and can say most of them.

by like 18 mo he would be able to point to most of them if i asked, but not say them.
