How did you potty train your 2 year old DD?

I have all carpets in my house so letting her run around with no diaper is not an options. She is interested in the potty and will tell me when she has pooped. Should I buy some pull ups and start putting her in those? What is the best way to potty train a 2 y/o DD? We need to get on this, she is leaking through all her diapers because she pees too much, she is just too big for diapers now.

Re: How did you potty train your 2 year old DD?

We potty trained my daughter when she was 2 years 7 months, and I played a big role in potty training the little girl that I babysit for when she was 2 years 3 months.

I have to tell you that carpets or not, I am a firm believer in letting them go without a diaper.

Both girls were trained within 3-4 days that way.

With my daughter we were living in an apartment and had carpets in all rooms except the kitchen and bathroom. There were plenty of accidents. Days one and two there were more accidents then potty successes. But by day 3 or 4 she really started to realize that she was making some messes and she didn't like that. It made her WANT to use the potty.

With the girl I babysit for we were living in our house, so we have all hard floors in the house, aside from an area rug in the living room. Same story though with her, even at 2.3 years old. She didn't like making messes on the floor. So there were puddles to clean up for a day or two, and then she got the hang of it.

For both girls I made a potty chart, hung it on the bathroom door, and every time they went on the potty (even just good tries in the beginning) they got a sticker. I took them to Walgreens and Target and let them pick out the stickers themselves. The chart looked like a potty ... so they'd put the sticker ON the potty, and I found that it worked better then a graph style chart.

Anyway, I've had success this way. I feel like friends who didn't let their kids walk aroudn w/out a diaper --- well it took their kids MONTHS to potty train. Both girls that I was responsible for training had it down pat after 4 days. I liked that it didn't drag on. So for me it was worth it to have to clean up the messes for a few days. I kept the carpet cleaner handy! And then once diapers are thru...well, live just becomes easier and so it's worth it to me in the long run!
