post office lost my passport application, my original birth certificate and my marriage license!
I am livid!!!! I filed for a new passport last month. Since I couldn't find my old, expired one, I had to send in my original birth vertificate and marriage license to change my name. I tried to check the status online today and it didn't come up. I called the passport office and they had no record of my filing. I went to the post office with my receipts and they can't find any record of it being proccessed. At first I was upset about the passport, then the reality set in. They lost every important paper for anyone to steal my identity. My SS# is on the application, my original birth certificate and my marraige license. What more can a criminal ask for?!
I already went to my town clerk to get a new marriage license. Tomorrow I have to drive all the way to Trenton, NJ, 2 hours from my home, to get a new birth certificate which takes an hour and half, and then drive 2 hours home. Can my day get much worse?!

That sucks. You might be able to get a copy of the birth certificate by filling out an online request (I know NY had/has a phone line that you could call in and you just had to answer some information that was found on the birth certificate)

If I do it online it can take 15-22 days and I leave in 3 weeks. As much as I don't want to drive all the way to Trenton, there's nothing esle I can do at this point.

The Kearney NJ post office just lost my DS's custom invitatons ...What the heck is going on with post offices these days

I thought that was part of the $110 they charged me. She gave me a receipt for the charge and another for the money order to the passport agency and said that's all I needed. I tursted that was true, but apparently not.

did you send it Certified Mail - Return Receipt Request (RRR)? or just drop it off and hope for the best???
Wow, if it got lost with all that, that stinks. USPS has been dropping the ball lately - I had a Lands End package sent via UPS (dropped off at USPS for local delivery) and it never got delivered. I had to call Lands End Customer Service to complain and the next shipment came directly via UPS. I dont trust the Post Office anymore!

The woman who was supposed to file my papers will be in tomorrow morning and they're going to try to get to the bottom of it. Other then that, all they're saying is that they will cover the expense of expediting it.

I would definately sign up for one of those credit protection agencies, they are like $10/month I think. If someone got a hold of all that info, just think of the damage they could do!

No, all you have to do is call the 3 credit agencies and put a freeze on you credit - it's free. No one will be able to open anything in your name

You got that sh!t right! I also recently renewed and dropped off at the po. I was mortified to hand over orig documents too! But what choice do you have? I didnt certify or rrr either. Im glad mine returned but im so pizzed for you!!!!!!! I would be calling my damn congressman!!

UPDATE- they tracked it down at some priority mail department and are having it sent back to them. They are going to pay to have it rushed. I feel a little better, but I'm not going to relax until that passport is in my hands. I leave 3 weeks from tomorrow.

I recently sent in my Mom's passport renewal using this method. It cost less than $6. I was able to see online that it arrived within 2 days and less than 2 weeks later she had received her new passport in the mail.
Damn, that sucks what happened to the OP tho

Things like that I always send via certified mail with proof of delivery AND I track and confirm that it was received. I did the same for my passport renewal (I actually went to the post office and they process and mail it out) and I tracked that bad boy until I knew it was delivered and being processed.

OMG That sux so bad! I'm so sorry for you. I would try to see if they will pay to put a service on your credit report to see if people open new accounts. There is something where, whenever someone tries to open a new account they have to call you to verify that you're approving it.

Yay, glad to see the good update. USPS did the SAME thing to me when returning the documents. Lost It!! Thankfully the random person they delivered it to tracked me down (not too hard with all my original docs in there) and delivered it personally..thank goodness for wonderful people in the world still.
