rent-a-car and child safety seats?
If you were going to rent a car on a family vacation and needed a child safety seat, would you just rent a seat from the car rental company, or bring your own? And if bringing your own, did you install it yourself or have somebody from the car rental place help? Thanks in advance!

I would bring one and install it myself.
Too many horror stories, too many variables for me to ever rent a seat. There are lightweight, inexpensive seats you can get for travel. If you don't know how to install your seat, see a tech and have them teach you. After that it's practice.

I just rented 2 with the rent a car. They were bagged and clean when I got them.

I would definitely bring my own. Even if the rental car seats were clean, you never know what the people that rented the seat before you did to it. Or if the company cleaned the seats with something that could degrade the plastic or the material of the straps.

I rented one a few months ago when I went to visit sister in TX and it was horrible. It didn't look clean and it wasn't even fitting right. We ended up using my sister's from the previous year... The car rental companys don't help you install either, they say they can't due to liabitlity reasons.. with that said we are going to disney next month and I will be buying a cheaper one from Target, cosco scenara (got good reviews) for about $40 and will bring it with us.. We needed an extra seat anyway for DH's car.

I brought my own. You don't know the condition of the seat, whether they have been in accidents or not, if they are the correct seat (have heard of people needing a convertible and they get a booster).
The car rental people from what I have read and heard will not install a seat (even a rental one) for you. That they do not want responsibility so they make you install it. I had a friend rent a seat and they were forced to install it themselves and were not given instructions.

I bring my own and install it myself. For the convertible - I usually check it with the luggage.

I brought my own car seat and installed it myself into the rental car. It gave me peace of mind and I think it was comforting to DD to have her own seat that she was used to!
