Odd Old Wives' Tales You've Heard About Pregnancy

Just curious what you've heard that sounds odd to you?

I've heard:

- you're not supposed to eat watermelon, pineapple, papaya and mango because they are considered too 'hot' or 'cold' and may harm your baby

- you're not supposed to attend a baby shower while pregnant or else your own baby may become mentally ill

- you're not step outside your home until after 1 month of giving birth

so a little background so that you guys all aren't Chat Icon

I'm korean and koreans seem to have old wives tales for EVERYTHING. When I told my mom i was pregnant, she told me that my grandmother told her

-Dont eat crabs because then your baby will be the type to pinch people. I guess meaning backstabbing or bad character overall
-Don't eat octopus or any other thing that doesn't have bones. I guess so the baby won't be spineless
-don't jump over fire or the baby will fall out? Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I'm asian too so it could be some wack old wives' tale... I don't believe most but my sister told me she actually went to a baby shower despite being pregnant and the baby (not hers, but the one being honored) developed serious autism. :P

I was supposed to attend my SIL's baby shower too while pregnant but decided against it 'cus my sister was adamant I don't attend. :P

This is my favorite:

If you have a craving for something and don't indulge it, your baby will be born with a birthmark in the shape of the thing you were craving. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Yes, I have heard this from my mom/grandma!

Also dont look at anything unattractive, only pretty things, so that your baby turns out attractive.

never speak an ill word about the appearance of anyone else's baby or child, or your baby will come out unsightly.

i'm asian too and here are the ones i've read about:

- don't hammer things or do construction during pregnancy or else you can miscarry because the baby's soul will get hammered away or something like that

- don't curse or else the baby will be cursed

- be happy during your pregnancy and your baby will be a happy baby

- don't eat in the middle of the night or else your baby will always wake up in the middle of the night after they're born

- don't goto weddings or celebrations while pregnant because they somehow might conflict with the pregnancy

OMG didn't know this was an actual old wives tale, but it's something I follow RELIGIOUSLY even before pg...because I feel like how DARE I say something about another baby's appearance when I don't have any kids yet!!!

plus I'm SUPER superstitious, so I would feel like saying it would cause it!! Chat Icon

In my family - When trying to get pregnant, you are supposed to keep the sock of an infant in your underwear drawer to help things along. Funny thing is, I tried to get pregnant for 3 months with DD#1, on the 4th month my mom insisted I put an infants sock in my drawer, I did and that was the month I got pregnant!
