 NYC teachers with negative days
I am a teacher in NYC and worried about my maternity leave. I am due about 2 weeks before Christmas. I am negative ( a lot) of days. Not many to even borrow. I am going to the UFT workshop in October but I want to get an idea of what I am going to have to do. Will my time just be unpaid? That is going to be difficult!

Re: NYC teachers with negative days
The workshop will help a lot. You can borrow 20 days...but I think **not 100% sure- ask at the meeting** if you have 10 days, then you can borrow 10 so you go up to -20.
I'm negative 2, so I can borrow 18...then I use the 30-day grace. So I'll be covered and paid for the 6 weeks.
  Hope that helps.

Thanks...I am actually negative 18!!! I was really sick for 2 years so I had to be out a lot. So really, I can only borrow 2? LOL...this is going to be tough!

Re: NYC teachers with negative days
don't forget that you will also be accruing days (1 per month) and can also buyback the days you've borrowed to help get you closer to zero. My payroll secretary told me that I could buyback up to 3 borrowed days per pay period following my last FMLA when I had my daughter.

Re: NYC teachers with negative days
You get screwed in the summer though. If you borrow days they take money out of your summer pay checks. This happened to my friend. I don't have ALL the details about this though. I'm going to the meeting next week.

You wouldn't need to borrow days in the summer. In the summer, you dont have to use ANY CAR days..

I know it makes NO sense! But my friend had borrowed days when she went out on maternity leave early in the school year. Then this summer her pay checks were smaller than normal. When she called HR connect and the UFT they told her it was because she had borrowed days during her maternity leave. It makes NO sense to me but that's what they told her. Another friend of ours who had a medical issue and had to borrow days had the same thing happen to her. Her summer pay checks were smaller.
Maybe I'll get clarification at next week's meeting. Our maternity leave is terrible, in my opinion!

Re: NYC teachers with negative days
When you borrow days you have to "buy them back" you can do like 2 a month, plus the day you normally accrue but they do deduct 2 days pay from those checks--bc you are "buying" them back.
If you have no days you can take the 6 weeks (by state law they have to allow you 6 weeks or 8 for csection) you just won't be paid.

You can actually take up to 12 weeks through FMLA, as long as you've been in the DOE for 12 months

But you DONT GET PAID FOR 12 WEEKS. Only paid for 6 no matter what (8 for c-section). FMLA gives you insurance for 12 weeks

Re: NYC teachers with negative days
We have the worst maternity! I lucked out and was -4 days and then didnt get paid for 2 weeks. You can take up to 12 weeks I think but only 6-8 weeks will be paid. If you dont have days you can borrow up to 20 and then the rest are unpaid.
I got told they slowly take out the time that you dont get paid for from your checks. If they have taken it out I haven't felt it. Its only a few days each check. As for my -4 days that you get back a day each month you work.

You can borrow up to 20 days.
If you've got negative days, most of your leave will be unpaid. We were advised to "buy the days back" once we returned to work.

If you're buying days back, they have to come out of your check at some point. I'd talk to your payroll secretary about buying one or two a month.
