UPDATE-Talked to a dr....Freaking out a bit..need some help determining what this message means...

Ok - so I am not at home and I am away until Monday night!

So tonight at midnight, I randomly checked my home messages and I got a message from the place where I got my NT scan last week..not my OBGYN's office

It said that I need to call them and set up an apt based on the results from my apt last week..that is it..no other facts!

I of course called at midnight tonight to see if they are open/have office hrs in the morning (SAT) and naturally they don't! Chat Icon Chat Icon and with the holiday weekend..I probably wont be able to talk to someone until Tues...I am flipping out! What did they find ont he sono that I need to make an apt for to discuss! Chat Icon Chat Icon

I know the baby wasnt cooperating and was facing away from the "camera" for 90% of the time...and i guess best case scenerio is that they just need to redo the sono to double check...

The tech told me as she was measuring the back of the neck that it looked good (it was in the 1 mm - not sure if I am using the correct unit of measure - and somewhere in the 3 mm range is where red flags are raised)...so I dont *think it could be that

Please help me calm down over the holiday weekend and assure me tell me what else they could mean!

Thanks..sorry this is so long!

UPDATE: (sorry so long)
So a doctor called back from the sister office of the sono place....

He explained to me the results of the test...

He said that a "normal" pregnancy would come back with 1/370 chance of down syndrome ...

and my test came back with a 1/100...
which he said is slightly elevated...

He said to just remember that it is still "only a 1% chance" which is not bad but def something we want to look further too! He told me I should think about whether I want to consider an amnio...but honestly he usually only reccomends this for people with 10%-20% chance and esp since I am not "that old" (I am 32 now..will be 33 when this baby is born!)

SO of course I am freaking out..I cried for a good part of yesterday! My husband, of course, is away on a business trip all weekend...cried for a good 30 min with him on the phone as he tried to look on all the bright sides...

Thank god I have my parents here to help me with my 3yr old and 2 yr old!

But here is where I question the results..The baby wasn't cooperperating..and wasn't in a good position for 90% of the sono...Then all of a sudden it turned and she quickly took measurements..she said that it all looked good...so I wonder how the tech can tell me all looked good and then get these shocking results! I wonder if the tech didnt get good pictiures but took the results from them anyway!

This is what I am banking on! I hope Pt 2 of the NT sono give me better results!

And I am also wondering why this sono place has dealt with me..and why my gyno dr hasnt been in contact with me!?!?!?

Thank you so much if you have made it this far..I am not ready to tell people IRL so I needed to get this off my chest!

I could really use your prayers, thoughts, advice, BTDT tips, etc!

I never expereinced this with my first 2 pregnancies and am beside myself with questions fears and concerns!

If the baby wasn't cooperating, you likely need to go in for more measurements. I had to do the same thing with both baby #2 and #3. Both times I was left with a "cryptic" message and freaked like you are. Both times it was because they needed more measurements. With HIPPA, my OB's office is super duper secretive with regards to leaving phone messages- which makes me NUTS.

Try to relax this weekend- I'm sure everything is OK.Chat Icon

Just re-read your post. If it was the sono place calling then I'm SURE it's that their report wasn't complete. The radiologist probably read the films and said they needed more.

Thank you..this makes me feel better..maybe there just wasnt "good enough pictures" to do a thorough report...

I also thought it was odd it not being my OBGYN....and it was the sono place...so I am hoping and praying that is the case...

I just called the number and the office is closed until tues..which I figured...but the sister office answered and the receptionist was able to see my tests and said that she will have a technitian from their office call me today so I dont have to wait until Tuesday!

So now I wait for that phone call!

ugh!!

If there was something wrong with the baby, your OB would have called you. Radiology centers typically will not do that unless it's emergent and even then it would be the radiologist, not a clerical staff member or tech.

I'm sure the films were unclear and they need a re-do. Don't worry! Chat Icon

Re: UPDATE-Talked to a dr....Freaking out a bit..need some help determining what this message means...

1 in 100 is still not a bad result. My sister had a 1 in 14 and have the CVS test and everything was fine. My co-worker had a one in 23 and had the test redone and it came back as 1 in 400. If the measurements came back fine the blood part is probably what made the results come back with a higher chance. while yes they say it is higher than normal you reall have to think you have a 1 in 100 BUT a 99 in 100 of not having downs. the odds are so in your favor.

I opted out of the NT scan because I feel the results make you panic for no reason.

I would get re-measured instead of doing an amnio. Sounds like the tech was an idiot, they aren't supposed to tell you "looks good" or looks like anything.

ask for a second opinion!

Crashing: but remeber. This is not a test. Its a screening. Its wrong ALL the time. I had a 1in 10 chance. Was sick to my stomach for weeks. Anxiety attacks. Miserable. My gorgeous, perfect daughter was born Dec 9th with NO health issues. I know how you are feeling. But also remember that 50% of downs cases don't even show up on theses tests. Wish they would just stop giving it. With all my research I found there are many dr's around the country who want to stop offering this screening to anyone under 35 because all it really does is cause stress on the mother
Good luck

I have read that those tests give a lot of FALSE POSITIVES! Hopefully your second part is better, and again keep in mind that a lot of them are false +.

Praying that is your situation. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

my friend who is 30 had a 95% chance that her baby had downs bc of this test and her baby does not have downs she opted not to have amino they really should explain the chances to the mother in more detail and its just a screening

it doesn't hurt to get rescanned. it night make the world of difference,

on a sidenote...amnios are really not a big deal and the peace of mind that it provided (for me) was awesome.

I had almost the same results with both my DDs and had the cvs both times, both DDs are fine. I know how hard it is to relax, but try to focus on the positive, I'm sure everything is fine.

Thank you ladies..I cannot wait to share all these resonses with my DH when he gets back from his business trip tomorrow...you have made me feel (a little bit) better! I know I have to stay positive and the odds are still with me..but wow..what a scary few days it has been! I cannot wait to have another test/sono to confirm my theory that it wasnt the best of sono experiences!!

I appreciate your kind words!
Thanks

This is why I have been debating taking this screening. I have it scheduled in a few weeks. The results no matter what is going to cause me anxiety. I have heard so many times since last week when I starting looking into it how many times its a false positive. I have a good feeling for you - please try not to worry to much- the odds are still in your favor.

My results also came back 1/100 (I was the same age as you when I had DS). I opted not to have the amnio. DS was born 100% healthy! Like a PP said, this is just a screening and there are sooo many false positives. I know it's a lot easier said than done but please try not to get yourself too crazy over the results! Just wanted to add, I would be LIVID that I was hearing this from the sono tech and not from my OB-GYN.

Re: UPDATE-Talked to a dr....Freaking out a bit..need some help determining what this message means...

Are you completely opposed to an amnio, just for peace of mind? Honestly, as long as you don't have anterior placenta, they aren't a big deal. But, I would never give you advice to do something you are uncomfortable with. It is a personal decision.

I had an amnio with my first pregnancy, and had CVS with my next two. You have to make sure you go to a reputable doctor. It is so important. My perinatologist is the best in the business and I trusted him implicitly. He's never lost a baby to anything, ever. And he's been practicing for 25 years. But I also knew someone who did lose a pregnancy because she had an amnio and had an anterior placenta. So its important that you don't have that.

But, really, if you don't care either way if your DC has Downs, none of it really matters, anyway. You'd just be doing it to prepare yourself for the special care your child would require. But your doctor doesn't seem overly worried, so I wouldn't worry yourself, either. You have plenty of time to consider an amnio. Remember, 1 in 100 are great odds for there to be no issues.

Good luck for whatever you decide!

Re: UPDATE-Talked to a dr....Freaking out a bit..need some help determining what this message means...

They should combine these results with your bloodwork (probably done by your ob) & get a better estimate for you.

Most women who have children with downs are under 35 (because they typically don't get screened). I think the NT is a great, non-invasive way to lower the numbers (and give an estimate to older women who don't want an amnio). Actually, it has DECREASED the number of amnios done.

I had a false + for another trisomy based on bloodwork alone. They re-took my bloodwork in 4 weeks & recalculated my risks before I could even get an amnio. It was a terrible 4 weeks, BUT I had great peace of mind knowing my risk went from 1/100 to 1/60,000.
