More breastfeeding help - sleeping at the boob

So I have been having a lot of problems getting DD to bf, but she is finally latching on with a shield. Now she will suck for like 2 or 3 minutes, and then she falls asleep. I try to wake her, but nothing we do does the trick - we have stroked her face and body, and taken her clothes off and that still wont wake her. I see milk in the shield, so I know she is getting something. Any tips on how to keep her sucking longer? Thanks.

try moving her top arm around in a bicycle type motion. i had to do this constantly with my dd in the early days, and it definitely helped.

A cool washcloth to the body definitely helped!

We had similar problems with latching and using the shield for a few weeks - as hard as it was, it got so easy once she was a month old. Hang in there!

I had to fight to keep DD awake for a while but that ended quickly. Here are a few suggestions from what I remember doing.

Talk to her enthusiastically, make some subtly startling/funny noises.

Tickle her.

Clothes off.

Cool Wash cloth.

I wore a nursing necklace when she got older to limit distractions, maybe something bright would hold her attention.

a cool washcloth works sometimes
the NICU nurses taught me (this sounds weird but it works 90% of the time) to hold the baby up with their legs dangling. babies are used to being grounded so its unnatural to them to have their legs dangle. within a few minutes they usually start to squirm and pull their legs up, and within a minute or two their eyes open or they cry for a bit. its not uncomfy to them, just unnatural.
i also try changing position or switching boobs when DD falls asleep.

Thanks! We had been using the shield (or trying to) so not sure what changed, but I am so so thrilled - it is something!
