Tongue Tied? So unsure....

For all those ladies that have had DC that were tongue tied, how did you know?

I am starting to believe Nicholas is tongue tied but the Ped has never mentioned it. DH & I were talking this weekend bc DS who will be 10.5 months this week does not utter a word. He is just starting to make shreeking noises & "ahhh" but otherwise he is mute. I have noticed too that when I stick my finger in his mouth, he automatically pushes his tongue back & I can't lift under to see if he is indeed tied. He has had no issues with feeding & is definately gaining weight (25lbs already).

I am taking JJ for his 21 month checkup tomorrow, would you mention it to the Ped to see if they want to see him or just get an appt with an ENT (we are going with JJ on Friday)?

Speech/Feeding therapist here:
Does he ever stick his tongue out of his mouth? If so, how far does it come out?
A pretty good indication of a tongue tie if they can't stick their tongue out.
When you spoon feed him and he opens his mouth in anticipation does his tongue come out too?
Is he eating any dissolvables or chewables? Can he use his tongue to move the food from side to side?
I would mention it to the Ped if it's on your mind, a lot of times doctors don't even notice (even in severe cases).

My DD was tongue tied. At birth you could see a notch at the tip of her tongue and when she cried you could see a tight band. The LC consultant pointed it out right away when she had difficulties nursing. I had it snipped around 3 months and has been nursing like a champ since. HTH

my son was tongue tied...it was pretty noticeable. he couldn't get his tongue out past his lower gum line and you could see the attachment when he cried...we had it snipped at an ENT in Manhasset...it was a really quick procedure and he didn't seem to mind..hth

Thank you so much for responding. I noticed this morning that his tongue does not go past his gumline & he does have an indentation at the tip of his tongue. I asked the Ped today & he told me to make the ENT appt. Fortunately when I callled, they had an opening tomorrow, so I will know tomorrow.

Re: Tongue Tied? So unsure....

Truthfully, I never noticed. Jeremy had ZERO feeding issues. At a sick call visit, the peds said something at 8 months that he MIGHT have an issue with his "L"s. We hadn't made a full transition to table food yet but that night I saw that when putting more solid foods in his mouth, he had a very hard time moving the food back with his tongue. It finally dawned on me that he couldn't stick his tongue out. Im not supposed to know - Im his mother not his doctor and quite honestly, I am pizzed as all hell that with all of the doctors who see him, it took 8 months for someone to notice it with all of the tongue depressors that have been in his mouth.

So tomorrow, when Jeremy gets tubes in his ears, the ENT will release his tongue tie as he will already be under anesthesia. I am not going to wait for an issue to present itself and not one of the many SLPs I work with say there is a danger for doing it other than a possible infection. That I can monitor.

Re: Tongue Tied? So unsure....

this post is freaking me out, I never would suspect DS is tongue tied...

He's an amazing eater, has a few words, makes all kind of sounds, but ...

No matter how I tried to get him to do it, what gave me we played, or what we did, he would never ever stick his tongue out.

only recently he started to lick his lips (mimicking me) Is this enough of "sticking tongue out"

And while he tries to mimic every word we say, he has a lot of trouble saying them with all their sounds. But he's only 15m, and i don't know if thats just how 15m old talk. Honestly, i have yet to see another 15m boy saying anything .I see girls but they are chatting up a storm nothing like DS.

So can you explain this sticking tongue out thing a little? What exactly are you looking for?

With DS, he can only extend his tongue to him gumline & no further. If his tongue makes a "taco shell" shape, he can get it out further but not much more (maybe to his lips).

I noticed it bigtime today when I saw him cry & his tongue was depressed back & I saw he was attached at the beginning.

You know Leslie, I said the same thing! I feel terrible that I am only discovering this NOW on my own at almost 10.5 months. I noticed when I started to give him more table foods that he was having issues but I just attributed it to his "preemie" status. Then last night as we were feeding him ice cream, it dawned on me that no matter how hard we try, we can't get him to stick his tongue out & his tongue always goes back...
