How does your Ped handle fevers?

I am not sure what to do..my son has had 104 (+/-) sinceTues pm. Took him to the dr just now and they said it was a virus and just sent us home. He tonsils are completely swollen and have white stuff on them. strep came back neg and they just sent us home. Said that if he is not better in 2 days to come back.

I am just curious how your dr would handle this. This is not the first time they sent us home and we always end up going back 2 days later and geting an rx. I cant figure out if they are doing what is best for the child or their pockets.

I am thinking about changing peds especially if other ped would handle this differently.

That sounds completely irresponsible to me. "White stuff" doesn't have to be strep but it has to be SOMETHING. Can you go to urgent care while you find a new ped? I hope he's better soon

If he is not showing signs of getting better tomorrow I will take him somewhere else. It just piss es me off that I just paid a $30 copay for them to say give it a couple of days and come back....

Honestly I don’t know how our peds handles fevers; luckily (knocking on wood) dd hasn’t really had high fevers.

But to me it seem unacceptable, if this has been going on for a few days and your dc has white stuff in there throat or on the tonsils. I would be ticked if I was told it’s just a virus come back in 2 days if the fever still exists. If there another Dr, in the office that you can maybe talk too? Or is there a after care nurse that maybe could give you some insight?

Dd has never had a high fever before but I have tonsiltis right now and I have high fever and white puss. My strep test cane back negative but they put me on antibiotics for 10 days for the tonsils. I agree take him to urgent care get a second Dr to look at him.

NO WAY!

Sorry but 3days is the max my doc allows with a fever. And that's with NO OTHER circumstances.

I can't imagine just sending a baby home with 'white stuff' .. no way.

but you're saying he says 5 days with fever?! Sorry but that sounds wrong! Especially with such a weak answer.

There is a virus going around with high fevers for 4+ days....my whole family just recouped from this. We went to the ped, they did strep, checked ears, all was fine. IMO there is nothing he can do for a viral infection.

My ped would do the same. If it's a virus antibiotics wouldn't help. The fever is helping her kill the virus so I would just keep her cool. My ped wouldn't be concerned unless the fever was that high for another couple of days. It will probably break tomorrow. I think your ped is being very responsible and doing what's right for your LO. My ped actually wouldn't even be concerned unless the fever was 105.

This is exactly what ds has (17months). We are on day 3.5 of 104+ fever (highest taken has been 105.4!) they said his throat is swollen and white stuff coating his tonsils and it's probably a virus. He was on anitbiotics anyway because they originally said ear infection so they obviously aren't helping. They ususally don't prescribe antibiotics. I'm going back tomorrow if he's not better i hope he is it's really scary.

We still have crazy high fevers here. Now both of my boys have it. This had been the worst illness ever.

Just an FYI, they usually will give antibiotics for high fevers, for cases that check out for bacteria, in the theory that it will help prevent other bacteria from causing trouble on a weakened system.

A lot of the younger smarter peds just wont give antibiotics because they don't believe this theory and there is new research to suggest antibiotics may make viral diseases worst. Some peds/physicans in general give something, because parents/patients just expect it.

Knock on wood, DS has never had a fever. But if your shoes I would be freaking out, and running to the emergency room on the 2nd day, and keep looking for a ped that told me something I was satisfied with. You have to have a ped you trust, first and foremost.

We are on day five of diareha and day two of high fever (103+). Just came back from ped. Took my copay, told me there is a stomach virus going around and sent me on my way. I should have stayed home and ordered pizza with my $20
