After 5 or 6 years from the date of manufacture, the plastic breaks down and will not properly protect the baby in the case of an accident.

Hard hats used on construction sites also expire after 5 years. The plastic gets broken down somehow.

Car seats and bases expire after 6 years because safety standards are always changing. 6 years after manufacture date, they expire.

5-6 years based on the date it was manufactured. My convertible car seats had the date on the box

Not that I would EVER use an expired carseat, but I can't help but wonder if it's just a way to make $$...Think of everything plastic is used for...they cant make carseats out of plastic that lasts longer than 5 years???
