decorating on a budget

So I have about 1000 bucks to get curtains, blinds, throw pillows, lamps, etc for my living room, and dining room.

Any suggestions of where to go? Curtains are so expensive, esp when I need to buy each panel separately and I need to get about 10 of them Chat Icon

I was thinking of maybe even going out to the outlets to see what their home stores have..

JCP or Target for curtains!!!

Don't feel like EVERYTHING has to be done at once. Take your time so you get stuff you really like.

Re: decorating on a budget

Do you guys have a Marburn Curtain out by you? They're really inexpensive.

Target is great for curtains too.

Pillows and stuff - HomeGoods, TJ Maxx, Marshalls.

Once in awhile if you have the coupons, you can do well in Bed, Bath and Beyond. They tend to be pricey though.

Pottery Barn has pretty decent sales if its on clearance but that is more for rugs and stuff. I paid like $200 or my rug in the LR......it was $800 new. Why I let the kids on it is beyond me Chat Icon Chat Icon

I dont know where my sense of how much things add up to comes from, but I seriously thought I had more than enough money..not the case. its like 500 bucks just for the curtains that I want..I think I might just have to do things slow rather than settling..hopefully we will be able to host something in the fall Chat Icon

Re: decorating on a budget

Why don't you post what you are looking for an we can help you find it cheaper..why do you need each panel seperately?

Re: decorating on a budget

Ikea is great for cheap curtains.

I would definitely check out Home Goods/Target/Walmart/Century 21, etc.

I def dont need to buy them seperately..but thats how I noticed a lot of the places I was looking were selling them..

Ideally, I would love to pay like 30 bucks for a pair..I know thats going to be hard to find, but I just can't see spending half my budget on curtains. Perhaps I will do it slower and hold out until I can afford what I want..

I got an awesome deal on curtains at amazon. I needed 8 panels. They had a PAIR of panels for $36!! And they are beautiful............look so much more expensive than they are. As for everything else, check out Home Goods and Marshalls. I got some great deals on pillows at Kohl's. I got beautiful brushed nicked lamps at Lowe's for $25/each and the shades for maybe another $10/ea more. Pier 1 also had some good finds too! Just keep poking around, good deals on housewares are everywhere! Chat Icon

Re: decorating on a budget

IKEA has similar but nothing exact $20 for 2 panels mostly

IKEA

Not necessarily cheaper-but love urbanoutfitters-maybe go with a pop in a few rooms and more simple in others(so Kmart, walmart, target etc)

Re: decorating on a budget

Just had a thought-you can also buy fabric and use stich witch or hem tape to make finished edges and hang with clip rings-or get a grommet set and you can use regular curtain rings. We are planning to do this on my porch-SO much cheaper

Re: decorating on a budget

Pier 1 has some interesting panels...

Also - I've seen people use shower curtains as window treatments as well.

Re: decorating on a budget

This may be a stupid question...but if I have three windows in the living room..I do the same curtains on all, correct? I can't do a pattern on one and plain on the others right? Chat Icon

I feel like an idiot all of a sudden when it comes to this stuff...but I am realizing more and more that I thought I knew what I was doing, but I don't Chat Icon

Re: decorating on a budget

Here is a great tip...Windows are all different sizes and one panel is actually usually enough to cover the whole window. I am not really the type who only likes one panel per window (I like to have the curtains parted on either side of the window). But if I buy two panels for one window there is SO much extra fabric left over, its a waste of money. So I buy one panel per window and then cut them in half and use no sew hem tape to finish the cut sides. If you have 3 normal size windows in your room you would only need 3 panels NOT 6. I went to Ikea and got their plain white curtains (2 per package) and was able to do 2 regular size windows and one Bow window with two packages. So for $30 I have curtains for my whole livingroom. Not to mention that I need longer curtains and they come unhemmed.

Of course this being said - you need to be able to see the potential in things. If you already have curtains you LOVE, its probably going to be hard to recreate cheaper, unless you are willing to compromise.

Re: decorating on a budget

What about something like this?

External Image

Its 59.99 for the pair at Ikea...BUT...the measurements state 57" wide but that each measurement applies to each individual panel. Unless your windows are 114 inches wide you wouldn't need both panels per window. You could use one curtain per window and then you would only be spending $30 per window (Of course you would have hem and tweak a little) It just depends on how much you are looking to spend. As far as pillows go, I have also seen lots of tutorials online about making couch throw pillows from fabric placemats that are really easy, and you can get things like that from Pier1 on sale with nice patterns. It will take some time, but you dont have to break the bank.

Of course the above was just example, and style might not be what you are looking for.

all you need is a simple hem! that's it! the "tough" is deciding amongst all the beautiful patterns!~

as for the other pinch pleat one, that's easy as well!
