Gross!! Dh and I went to see a house that our REA recommended. We walked in to food all over the floor, cat litter all over the kitchen tile, DD coffee and an old bagel in the bedroom..disgusting. We walked right out.

We once walked into a house; the owners were at work but gave realtor the ok to take us through. Literally looked like someone came & dumped a truckload of laundry into one of the rooms...literally laundry in every imaginable spot. Then, every bedroom was cluttered w/ stuff everywhere; cups on the nighstands, dressers; clothes on the floor; the kitchen had a sink FULL of dishes & the counters were full of pots/pans. It was really bad. We just looked at e/o & walked out.

When dh and I were looking for a home years ago, our REA brought us to a house that had dog poop all over the living rooms floors, and it wasn't fresh..like oh my dog just did that like 2 min. before you walked in. It was like hard crap that was there forever and you couldn't even walk on the carpet without stepping in a pile.
We seen that and walked right out, and we were mad b/c the REA knew about and thought we'd "look" past that.
just gross how some people live.

We looked at a house once that was disgusting....dirty grease-stained kitchen, reeked of animal, weird brown stains on the fridge, and basically looked like it hadn't been deep cleaned in YEARS. When we mentioned something in passing to the listing agent about the house being dirty, she looked surprised and said that the owner had just had a cleaning service come and clean the house. I don't even want to imagine what the house must have looked like BEFORE the cleaning service

I think there is a difference between filth and just untidy.
This is untidy. Doesn't really seem filthy. Certainly not ideal if you're trying to sell you home so I agree with OP. It is a real turn off to a potential buyer.

I agree. It just looks like they don't know how to organize but it doesn't look dirty dirty.
And I'm sure the person who buys the house will clean it big time just as they would a tidy house.
The only negative I see from watching all those HGTV shows is that they will have a hard time getting the # they want.

I agree its messy, but I was expecting much worse based upon the comments.
Agreed, they should have cleaned up better before taking the photos, but I have seen so much worse IRL when looking for a home.

I totally see past the messiness of the house when I ever went to see one..
Is it smart to not tidy up the house, especially before pics, no, it's not. BUT someone like me will look past that and see the potential in the house.. you are buying the house not the crap these people chose to have thrown all over the place

I think that house was a short sale- I remember seeing it a while ago.
We went to an open house that looked very similar to the condition this house was in, complete with dishes in the sink and crumbs on the counter.
Sometimes people are getting divorced and when 1 party dosen't want to sell, they make it difficult to be an @ss- could be the situation here.
Regardless, i would think as the REA, they would at least make the f-ing bed!

I was actually expecting much worse. That house is messy, but didn't seem visibly filthy or anything. To me there's a huge difference between a house with piles of dog crap all over the floor (I'd probably walk out too) and a house with kids' toys and junk lying around.
I think the sellers are foolish for not putting some effort into straightening up before photographing it, but like someone else said, it's probably a rental and the owner can't get them to clean up.
