Do you shut off your oil burner for spring/summer?

At our last oil burner cleaning, the tech told us we could shut it off from May 1-Sept to save $$ on oil. He said that everyone is trying to save $ and that we should consider it.

Have you ever done this? What are the pros/cons? How does this impact the hot water heater?

TYIA!

I think my oil burner heats our hot water so that wouldn't work. Not sure if that is how they all work.

If your hot water heater using oil, then you cant shut it off, unless you dont plan on using any hot water for those months.

My parents have done this for yearsss. They have to flip it on about 10 min before they shower but my mom said it has saved them a ton of money.

How does the hot water stay heated for other hot water needs? Dishwasher, sink?

We were told not to turn it off, because it can cause a buildup in the boiler (or something like that). So DH turned it down so it won't go on nearly as much as in the winter.

We did because we thought we were doing the smart thing, we have a hot water heater so We didn't think it was necessary to keep it on. Maye we should put it back on?????

I cant imagine that it saves that much money and we were always told that turning the burner off and on is not good for it. Its not like a lamp

Well i dont know the details but theyve been doing it since before i moved out and bought my house and that was over 5 years ago. I believe it was someone at the oil company that initially suggested it and knock on wood theyve never had any real issues with the burner. Since they dont have a separate hot water heater the oil burner would kick on and off all day to heat the water and i think thats where the biggest difference was made. I remember thinking what a PIA but it saves them $ so oh well!

I think they would turn it on to run dishwasher, shower etc. But for the overnight it would stay off so it wasnt constantly kicking on and off. Their burner is ancient so i want to say since its so inefficient thats why it males a big difference.

Re: Do you shut off your oil burner for spring/summer?

Thank you so much for everyone's replies! I know the tech turns it off and on when he does his work (he doesn't have a choice!). I just don't know why he would tell me to do it if it was a bad thing...he told me a lot of things I don't think the company would want him to ie ways to save oil. Also, I have NO IDEA if my hot water heater is connected to the oil burner. The tech didn't say we would be turning it on and off to take showers so perhaps it isn't affected??

I wish we knew someone in the business we could ask! I no longer have a contract with this company so I can't call :(

Keep the ideas coming! Still on the fence about what to do!
