I don't think is rude of you at all! I have a number of friends that decided not to tell the name. They revealed the sex of the baby and said that because everyone knew the sex, they wanted to keep the name a surprise. It drove me nuts not knowing but I never, for one second, thought it was rude!

That is ridiculous. This is your choice (to not tell people the names) and there is nothing wrong with that. No reason for you to lie, IMO.

Ditto this! We did not share names at all and we were Team Chat Icon to make it worse for people.

I just did want to hear people's opinions of our name choices and deal with faces they might have made. My kid, my choice!

Your cousin can s*ck it.

DH and I have no intention of discussing names with family & friends. Why? Because I read how farking rude people are about name choices. I don't need someone to say "oh THAT's the name you are considering? I hate that name."

Well then you can have a kid and name one whatever you want. It's none of your damn business what I name my kid.

It's not rude to say "we aren't really discussing it" because too often when you DO discuss it, people stick their foot in their mouth and say the wrong thing!

I agree!!!!! We're aren't discussing with friends and family either. Whatever name we pick - WE PICK!! We don't need everyone's input/thoughts/comments. It's our choice and no one elses. Everyone knows we're having a Chat Icon so we tell them we have a list of names we agree on but we're keeping the name a surprise. So far everyone seems to say "ok" and gets it.

We told no one. Parents included. I heard to many horror stories of people saying something neg about a name, i figured who is going to tell you they hate the name after the kid is here.? They were not happy about not knowing, but they didnt need to be.

Re: Sharing name choices

we were pretty sure what we were going with but I said we weren't sure yet for a while. sometimes I said we were narrowing it down still since we had a very long list.
before knowing the sex we just said we aren't picking until we know what we are having... even though I had a boy and a girl list.

I totally understand not wanting to tell people your name choices because that just gives them a doorway to think it's appropriate to say their opinions and comments. And honestly I really didn't want to hear anything negative. Sometimes when we would tell someone the name they would just be like "Oh OK" and you know they don't like it even if they didn't say anything about it.

I'd keep it to myself for as long as possible. That's my personal opinion on it anyway.

Do I think it's rude to say you want to keep it a secret? No. But I do think it is a little nicer to say you aren't sure yet. However you can only say that for so long... it's not an answer that would get anyone to stop asking. Do what you are comfortable with.

I have to say it was easier with #2, b/c we didn't pick until we went to the hospital.

I don't think it's rude, I explain that my MIL cried to us before we even thought about kids when I just thought of a name out of the blue. She cried and told us that we have to name our first son after her late husband (we didnt) - so we keep names to ourselves now.
